THE POSITION:
Pasadena City College is hiring a full-time, tenure-track Physics Instructor commencing with the 2015-2016 academic year.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PHYSICS INSTRUCTOR:
- Teach a full load of lower division physics courses, ranging from physics for liberal arts majors to algebra- and calculus-based courses for science and engineering majors.
- Participate in the development, evaluation, and revision of the curriculum, including laboratory and distance- education courses.
- Participate in divisional and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities
- Participate with faculty to develop and assess student learning outcomes. Use the results to improve teaching and learning.
- Undertake the divisional and professional responsibilities of a regular faculty member
- Master’s degree in any
Physics, Astronomy or Astrophysics
OR - Bachelor’s degree in Physics or Astronomy AND a Master’s degree in Engineering,
Mathematics, Meteorology, or Geophysics
OR - A valid California Community College Instructor Credential
OR - The equivalent. (Degree must be shown as conferred on transcript. Some degrees may require equivalency. It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide documentation to support equivalent qualifications.)
- Experience in teaching physics at the community college level to a diverse student body, the majority of which are traditionally underrepresented in the sciences.
- Demonstrated experience in developing lower division physics curriculum which uses established high impact practices to increase student success and completion
- A dynamic personality and a strong desire to transform and improve STEM education in general, and physics education in particular
- The ability, interest and desire to teach astronomy
- Demonstrated passion for, and experience with, teaching a diverse student body with a broad spectrum of socioeconomic means and academic preparation
- Demonstrated proficiency in teaching first and second year college / university level physics or its equivalent
- Interest in, and experience with, innovative methods to teach and motivate students at all levels of college- readiness.
- Awareness of and experience with appropriate uses of technology in the teaching and learning of Physics
- Demonstrated ability to develop curriculum
- Experience developing and teaching on-line curriculum
- Knowledge of current practices in distance education including course management systems, e.g. Canvas
- Experience in and knowledge of instructional technology
- Ability to work in a multiethnic environment with students who have a variety of learning styles and abilities
- Ability to adapt varying pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of students with differing learning styles and abilities
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
- The Physics Department offers a comprehensive, multi- level program to meet the needs of both general education and transfer students
- The Pasadena City College physics program offers more transferable physics courses to more students than any other local two-year institution. The majority of our students consistently transfer to the University of California, the California State University, and some of the top private universities in the nation.
- Faculty are involved in outreach to the community and local high schools as well as collaboration with area four- year colleges and universities.

Ten Months, 100% - Tenure-track position beginning August 2015. Thirty-four (34) hours per week consisting of a combination of in-class teaching and preparation for teaching; five and one half (5.5) hours of additional time for student conferences; and five and one half (5.5) hours for professional growth and development, College governance and other professional responsibilities. The College has two 16-week semesters and summer intersession. The Division offers a full range of courses beginning at 7:00 a.m. and ending at 10:20 p.m. Faculty must be available to teach anytime within those hours.
