TT at Long Beach City College, CA

Long Beach Community College District is currently seeking one full-time tenure track Physics Instructor commencing with the 2015 fall semester. The primary assignment involves teaching and developing calculus-based physics lecture and lab classes. The assignment includes but is not limited to designing and evaluating curriculum for entry-level science students through science and engineering majors as well. This assignment also includes participation in the shared governance process through work in normal professional activities, committee work, and student activities. The teaching assignment may be at the Liberal Arts campus, the Pacific Coast campus or other college teaching locations. The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online or off campus and is subject to change as needed. Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics OR Bachelor's degree in physics or astronomy AND Master's degree in engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or geophysics OR the equivalent AND
  • Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Teaching experience in physics (lecture and lab) and astronomy, preferably at the community college level.
  • Experience designing/writing physics labs.
  • Experience teaching physics labs with computer interfaces.
  • Experience in making students active rather than passive participants in their learning.
  • Ability to foster student success with students from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of academic skills, while maintaining academic standards.
  • Ability to work effectively with students and colleagues in a collegial manner.
  • Interest in developing curriculum to meet student needs and strong commitment to scientific literacy, the community college system and general education science courses.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and in the use of electronic presentations in the classroom.
  • Evidence of participation in conferences and professional organizations.
  • A commitment to stay current with the latest developments in physics, astronomy and with astronomy and physics education research.
  • Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Long Beach City College.
  • Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
  • Commitment to the Mission and Strategic Objectives of the two-year college.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary range of $60,261.60 to $80,196.72 is commensurate with academic preparation and experience. The District contributes to medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

  • Based upon this rating, a small number of applicants will be invited to the campus for a second interview.
  • The Superintendent-President will make the final recommendation for employment to the Board of Trustees.
