Job Description:
The Division of Science, Engineering & Technology at Howard Community College (HCC) is seeking applicants for a full-time faculty position in the discipline of Physics.  The successful applicant will teach a range of courses that includes algebra-based physics, calculus-based physics and astronomy in both classroom and laboratory settings.  Coordination with division faculty, supervision and training of adjunct faculty, curriculum development, and student advising are required. Applicants are required to have a Master's degree or higher in Physics or Astronomy and to have college teaching experience.  The candidate will demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence that includes an ability to incorporate innovative strategies and integrate technology appropriately into their teaching.  Applicants must be willing to teach day and/or evening courses. The faculty member will fulfill a variety of college responsibilities including course and program assessment, participation in college wide activities and student clubs, and service on college committees. The ideal candidate has experience with astronomical observing, an interest in community outreach, and the ability to conduct experimental research with community college students.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Rank and salary will be determined by the Vice President of Academic Affairs.  For best consideration, application materials must be submitted by April 25, 2016.

Requirements:
Essential requirements:
  • Minimum of a Master's degree in Physics or Astronomy
  • College teaching experience in physics or astronomy  
  • Demonstrated record of teaching excellence
  • Ability to teach using a variety of approaches, including incorporation of technology
  • Effective interpersonal skills
Preferred requirements:
  • Experience in sponsoring student clubs or community outreach
  • Experience with curriculum development and assessment
  • Familiarity with results from physics and/or astronomy education research
  • Interest in engaging students in research projects

Additional Information:
  • Hours Per Week / Work Schedule:  Varies based on course load
  • Compensation:  Competitive salary commensurate with experience plus excellent health insurance, paid leave and tuition reimbursement
  • Grade:  10 month full time faculty. Rank determined by the Vice President of Academic Affairs
  • FLSA Status:  Exempt from overtime
