Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor in Science Education

The Department of Learning, Teaching and Curriculum at the University of Missouri (MU) invites
applications for two open-rank positions in Science Education. We anticipate hiring two science
educators at the assistant, associate, and/or full professor levels (9-month academic, tenured/tenure-
track appointments beginning August 15, 2015).
Successful candidates will work with internationally recognized, award-winning faculty in the MU
Science Education group (http://musciedcenter.org/index.html). MU is home to five tenure-track science
education faculty members including four faculty with joint appointments in science departments
(Biochemistry, Biology and Physics). The group also includes a non-tenure track science education
faculty member who specializes in STEM outreach and evaluation.
The MU Science Education group has an excellent reputation for research, grant activity, and science
teacher education. The group coordinates an undergraduate science teacher education program leading
to certification opportunities at the middle level (grades 5-8), secondary level, or both (5-12). We also
contribute to the Early Childhood and Elementary Education programs through science education
methods courses and specialized content courses for preservice elementary teachers. Our alternative
certification program, SMAR2T, leads to a master’s degree program for middle and secondary
preservice science teachers (http://www.smar2t.missouri.edu/). We also have a large doctoral program in
science education with a long history of supporting the development of researchers and science teacher educators.
Responsibilities:
• Establish and engage in a productive research program in science education that yields high-
quality scholarly publications;
• Secure external funding for research and service projects;
• Teach science pedagogy courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as seminars in
the Ph.D. program;
• Advise and mentor graduate students;
• Contribute to academic programs related to science education; and
• Contribute to the national visibility, stature, and impact of the MU science education group.
Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in science education or a closely related field;
• A minimum of three years of successful teaching in elementary, middle and/or high school
contexts
• Evidence of a demonstrated or emerging record of scholarly productivity.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Current funding or potential for obtaining external funding;
• Evidence of effective teaching at the university level;
• Online course development and teaching experience;
Salary: Competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Appointment: Tenure-track, nine-month appointment beginning August 15, 2014.
