Position Summary:
The Department of Physics at Virginia Tech seeks a Laboratory Technician to assist in introductory physics lab setup. Primary responsibilities are to serve as support for the physics labs, assist with the supervision of groups of student helpers to ensure that setups are done on time and correctly, and to assist the Lab Manager with updates of lab and lecture demonstration apparatuses by designing and fabricating new laboratory lecture demonstrations, as well as by making improvements to existing equipment. Consult with the Lab Manager and the faculty members to stay abreast of current physics teaching periodicals to ensure that the labs and demonstrations do the best possible job of educating students about the principles of physics. Troubleshoot and repair computer and physics laboratory equipment.
Additional duties include: maintain inventory of lab supplies and outreach equipment, keep presence in the lab rooms for TA assistance, check and report on stock of replacement supplies in the labs, keep demo and lab room organized, assist in the development of labs, work with student lab setup helpers to ensure proper lab setup, assist with demos when needed, keep physics lecture hall neat and stocked with supplies and help with various departmental inventory and surplus projects. Initial appointment is for one year with renewal based on funding.

Required Qualifications:
Experience with data acquisition software;
Experience assembling and testing lab equipment;
Experience diagnosing and repairing complex electronic circuits;
Experienced with using electronic diagnostic instruments such as oscilloscopes and multimeters;
Working knowledge of A/V systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in technical field related to physics;
Experience developing educational physics labs with instructors;
Experience working with a supervisor for physics lab and demo needs;
Experience working with Professors, and TAs;
Working knowledge of Pasco Capstone or DataStudio, and Vernier Logger Pro Software is a plus;
Experience working with students of all ages;
Experience working in a lab setting;
Working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
