STEM Education Summer research positions for students at University of Oslo

Summer research positions
Summer research positions to undergraduate and Master’s students who are interested in STEM Education and data analytics.

The University of Oslo’s Center for Computing in Science Education (CCSE) is pleased to offer summer research positions to undergraduate and Master’s students who are interested in STEM Education and data analytics.

This summer program will provide opportunities for students to engage in cleaning, analyzing, and modeling educational data, which could provide insights into teaching and learning outcomes, degree attainment, and other important educational outcomes.

The work is supported by CCSE in collaboration with the Learning Machines Lab (https://learningmachineslab.github.io/) and is supervised by Profs. Danny Caballero and Anders Malthe-Sørenssen.

Students who are accepted into the program will be offered relocation expenses and a modest stipend. The program will run from 17 June 2019 to 16 August 2019.

Instructor Position - Michigan State Department of Physics and Astronomy



The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University seeks to fill a non-tenure-track instructor position beginning Fall 2019. The initial duration of the appointment will be one year (12 months) with expectation of continuing renewal based on satisfactory performance. Responsibilities will include teaching introductory physics courses and development of studio physics formats. The course load will typically be two sections per semester with additional teaching-related responsibilities. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. The position requires an advanced degree (a Master's and/or PhD degree) in physics or physics education.

The James Madison University Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a renewable-term, physics education specialist at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2019.

The physics education specialist will work with the JMU Science and Mathematics Learning Center and others on campus to improve student success and retention in our introductory courses.
Qualifications
Candidates must have relevant experience in physics education, and a commitment to improving student success for a diverse population of students. A Ph.D. in physics or a related field is preferred. The ability to work with our existing efforts to increase the production of secondary level physics teachers and the ability to develop scholarly research questions based on student success in physics will also be considered as positive factors.

    Recruitment description
    Under the supervision of the Faculty Director for the Office of Instructional Development, the
    Academic Administrator will be responsible for the development and management of projects involving curricular revision and assessment. The first planned project is a thorough examination of UCLA’s General Education (GE) curriculum in the area of Foundations of Scientific Inquiry. The Academic Administrator will provide detailed analysis of existing instruments used to assess the success of GE courses, and develop new tools for such assessment. The Academic Administrator will conduct research on overall GE impact, review current course offerings, review literature on GE objectives and assessment, assist with revising existing courses, examine alignment between GE courses and GE student learning outcomes, and assist with coordinating a re-certification process. The incumbent may also teach in the Division of Life and Physical Sciences, time permitting. The Academic Administrator will also develop workshops for faculty related to GE course review and development. Authorship in his/her field is encouraged, time permitting, including preparing publications for conferences and peer-reviewed journals and assisting faculty with grant writing in support of new curricular programs as appropriate.

    The successful candidate must have an advanced degree (Ph.D. in a science field preferred); knowledge of undergraduate curriculum assessment and reform; experience working with academic policy and shared governance at a large public research university; skills in information retrieval and data management; demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to interact effectively in programs and activities involving faculty, staff, and students; consensus building activity; interpersonal skills to interact effectively with persons of differing social, educational, economic and cultural backgrounds; a track record of innovation in a science oriented curriculum; the ability to be flexible and pay attention to detail while keeping in mind the overall mission of OID. Desirable qualities include knowledge of UCLA processes and procedures; broad familiarity with existing curricula, programs and services for UCLA undergraduates; and experience with teaching undergraduate students.

    PER/AER/STEM Education Research Postdoc, Texas State

    Postdoctoral Researcher in Physics/Astronomy/STEM Education Research at Texas State University

    Summary of the position
    We are offering a postdoctoral-level research position in physics/astronomy/STEM education research in the Department of Physics at Texas State University. The selected candidate will work closely with Dr. Alice Olmstead on mutually agreed-upon work related to supporting sustained improvements in undergraduate STEM education and/or developing instructional innovations that highlight social justice issues. An interested candidate would be expected to work on at least one (but not all) of the following new projects: (1) identifying teams of STEM faculty and other stakeholders who are working together to address issues of equity and inclusion in their departments or institutions, and investigating what enables this work to be productive; (2) facilitating virtual conversations among physics and/or astronomy instructors who are trying out ways to engage students in reasoning about the relationship between science and society, and researching what unique opportunities and challenges this community of instructors might face; and/or (3) locally developing and piloting curriculum and pedagogy that could engage students in reasoning about the relationship between science and society, and researching the results. This position is part of a startup package and not affiliated with a specific grant.

    Job description
    The salary for this position is $50,000/year plus benefits. The initial contract is for one year, renewable for a second year. The selected candidate would be expected to engage in research activities such as: collecting and analyzing video data; conducting and analyzing interviews; identifying and recruiting study participants; preparing documents for human subjects institutional review board feedback; reviewing relevant literature; and disseminating results through written publications and conference presentations. The selected candidate may have opportunities to mentor undergraduate students in research, depending on the interests and expertise of those involved. The selected candidate will also be expected to participate in grant proposal preparation activities related to their research topic.

    The Physics department at Texas State University is home to a large physics education research group and a thriving undergraduate Learning Assistant program. The research group currently includes four tenured or tenure-track faculty members, two lecturers, a postdoctoral researcher, two Masters students, and multiple undergraduate students. The selected candidate would have regular opportunities to interact with this group and learn about other projects.

    Qualifications
    Minimum qualifications:
    -        Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, Science Education, or another STEM and/or education-related field
    -        Demonstrated commitment to improving equity and inclusion in STEM

    The American Physical Society (APS), a non-profit membership organization working to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics, seeks an Associate Director for the Education & Diversity Department. This position is based at APS Headquarters in College Park, MD (near DC Metro Green Line). The Associate Director works with the Director to lead a portfolio of programs, develop and execute department strategy, and coach staff on program leadership skills. In addition, the Associate Director represents the department and deputizes for the Director as needed.

    Essential Functions:

    Leads a portfolio of programs

    Under the supervision of the Director and in collaboration with program staff, provides strategic direction and support to program teams to deliver high-value outcomes.
    Cultivates and engages external collaborators to advance program objectives.
    Works in partnership with staff to assess program outcomes and provides strategic guidance to improve programs.
    Oversees program budgets and guides staff in budget development to ensure activities are appropriately resourced.
    Generates external funding through grant writing and collaboration with Development.
    Develops and executes department strategy

    Partners with the Director, Senior Advisor, and program staff to translate the APS strategic plan into program-specific goals and operational plans and ensures successful implementation of those plans.
    Provides thought leadership within the department leadership team, including the Director and Senior Advisor, and explores ideas in a safe, collaborative manner.
    Stays abreast of trends and liaises with community stakeholders to understand challenges, opportunities, and best practices.
    Coaches staff on program leadership skills

    Proactively identifies growth areas and coaches staff to develop skills and knowledge needed to be effective as program leaders.
    Fosters collaboration among department programs.
    Represents the department

    Partners with the Director and Senior Advisor to actively engage department committees and advance their work.
    Deputizes for the Director as needed.

    Qualifications:

    Education:

    Master’s Degree or higher (Ph.D. preferred) in a relevant field including physical sciences, science education, or another related field.
    Experience:

    10+ years of experience in leading innovative programs with demonstrated success in a not-for-profit or academic environment.
    Supervisory experience required.
    Experience with proposal writing and federal grant management is preferred.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Strategic thinker and innovative problem solver, with skills in strategic planning.
    Demonstrable skills in program leadership, including program design, stakeholder engagement, program assessment, project management, and budgetary management.
    Demonstrable skills in working effectively and collaboratively with staff, volunteer leaders, and other stakeholders in not-for-profit and academic institutions.
    Knowledge of education and diversity issues, as well as inclusion and accessibility.
    Ability to inspire staff and build a culture of innovation, teamwork, and accountability.
    Familiarity with the principles of mentoring, demonstrable skills in coaching staff.
    Customer service orientation, including ability to resolve conflicts constructively.
    Flexible, proactive, able to handle several complex projects simultaneously.
    Strong written and oral communication skills, including abilities to engage and influence.
    Must be able to travel.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a related field; the ability to teach a full range of courses at the undergraduate level; and evidence of outstanding teaching.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    Demonstrated exposure to and experience implementing teaching practices guided by physics education research such as studio physics; experience with educational technologies, such as online homework systems, message boards, instructional videos, smart boards, or classroom personal response systems (“clickers”); experience teaching large lectures.
    APPOINTMENT TERMS
    This is a 9-month, annually renewable, non-tenure track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2019.  This one-year contract may be renewed or lead to a multi-year contract in the future. This position does not lead to permanent academic tenure. This position will be filled subject to budgetary approval.
    Salary will be commensurate with experience. Summer teaching is not included in the standard 9-month appointment and is not mandatory but may be available.
