Department Summary
The faculty of the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Science, at San José State University is a team of dedicated teacher-scholars recognized for our commitment to excellent teaching, to engaging students in research projects, and to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in Physics and in STEM disciplines more broadly. We invite applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Physics Education Research (PER) or Astronomy Education Research (AER).
Required Qualifications
A doctoral degree in Physics, Astronomy, Science Education, or closely-related discipline is required. Candidates should have research experience relating to physics education research or astronomy education research. They must demonstrate the potential for meaningful engagement of undergraduate and Masters students in their proposed research. They also should be familiar with a variety of contemporary, research-based teaching practices techniques, and emerging technologies for instruction.
Applicants should demonstrate that they are prepared for and enthusiastic about teaching physics and/or astronomy classes at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, including general education courses, physics majors’ courses, and/or lower-division physics.
Applicants should have awareness of and sensitivity to educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other
comparable experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates who have an interest in upper-division PER and/or educational technologies - especially those applicable to online/remote teaching and learning - are particularly encouraged to apply. We highly value experience with and commitment to service in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion in physics and/or STEM in general. Therefore, we strongly encourage applications from candidates who have a record of such activities, whether or not this service was formally required by previous positions.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will teach physics and/or astronomy courses at the undergraduate and/or Master’s level. She or he will develop a research program in physics education research or astronomy education research, mentor undergraduate and MS students in research, and seek external funds to carry out research. The candidate will participate in shared governance of the University, usually on department, college, and university committees, and other service assignments. The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
Salary Range - To commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Starting Date - August 2021
