Mission or Goal of Unit	The mission of the Physics Department is the advancement of science through research and the training of undergraduate and graduate students in our discipline. The Department fosters a level of research and professional activity essential to the graduate program (M.S. in Physics and Ph.D. in Nanoscience & Nanotechnology) and to the professional growth of the faculty. The Department provides majors and graduate students with courses and research experiences that prepare them for their professional careers. It also provides service courses to other majors who require a physics foundation, as well as general education courses to all VCU students who wish to become more scientifically knowledgeable. The Department is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Finally, Department faculty have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to the university community.
Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal	This position is a term (non-tenure-eligible) faculty position to support the department’s undergraduate teaching mission. Appointment will be made at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor depending on qualifications
Position Responsibilities	1. Teaching Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in introductory physics. Possible course assignments may include but are not limited to: the introductory physics courses PHYS201, PHYS202, PHYS 207, PHYS 208, the Modern Physics course PHYS320, and the inter disciplinary courses INSC201-Energy, INSC300-Experiencing Science and INSC310- Contents of Elementary Science. Faculty member will teach between twelve and fifteen credit hours of instruction each semester. 2. Research Faculty member will not have specific research responsibilities. However, faculty member will be encouraged to participate in the research culture of the department and, upon agreement of the department chair, may reserve a portion, not to exceed 15%, of his or her time for that participation. 3. Service Faculty member will serve on departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary.
Required Qualifications	-Ph.D in physics or a closely related discipline. -Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Job Description Summary	Responsibilities will involve teaching undergraduate physics courses, performing related duties as required, management of first year labs (including instruments, computers and data acquisition software), and regular coordination with teaching assistants as well as other instructors. Lower Division Instructional Labs Coordinator, UC Santa Barbara

The Department of Physics seeks an Academic Coordinator to coordinate the lower division laboratory course activities for the Physics Department. This involves oversight of the laboratory instruction of the service courses and lower division sequence for the majors, totaling over 4200 students in 206 sections during the academic year and summer. The course laboratory sections include Basic Physics 3L, 4L, 5L, Introductory Physics 6AL, BL, CL, and General Physics 25L.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Lab Coordination/Training/Safety
Responsible for management and oversight of the Introductory Experimental Physics sequence which includes providing all materials, equipment, safety requirements, and training and space recommendations necessary to run the labs. In consultation with Instructional Program Manager and course instructors, implement the laboratory curricula and assist TAs with the laboratory instruction as needed. Write pre- and post- lab quizzes, lab report practices, and other instructional materials as needed. Coordinate the laboratory teaching schedule with the teaching assistants, graders and tutors, and meet with each laboratory section at the start of each quarter to resolve enrollment difficulties. Conduct weekly training meetings for the teaching assistants and prepare or direct the preparation of the laboratory materials. Weekly meetings include discussion of TA concerns and suggestions that may have arisen the previous week; review lab and safety issues on an ongoing basis. Regularly inspect and maintain laboratory apparatus to promote a safe and reliable lab environment. Repair or replace inoperative or outdated equipment.

Collaborate with Instructional Program Manager and Course Instructors on the design and implementation of new and modified course experiments. Coordinate changes in lab exercises and materials to match curriculum as needed. Implement set-up/tear-down of experiments in the labs regularly. Modify existing equipment or specify procurement of necessary apparatus to meet instructional needs in the instructional labs. In consultation with the Instructional Program Manager author and co-author laboratory manuals and updates for the lower division sequences. Cross-train to provide back-up support to other Program Coordinators and Lecture Demonstrations.

Administration
Maintain inventory and provide cost projections for regular replacement of equipment as well as infrequent, large-scale purchases. Regularly provide enrollment projections to the Instructional Program Manager and Academic Advisors.

Responsible for the ordering of equipment for the lower division labs, comparing component vendors for quality, compatibility, price. Produce quarterly lab schedule matrices for all lower division instructional lab time slots, as well as individual lab schedules during the academic year and summer session.

These duties require an extensive understanding of the course materials and course objectives with the ability to assess how material from different aspects of the course(s) relate to one another, as well as the safe application of each learning outcome as detailed in the course material. Knowledge of health and safety regulatory requirements associated with experimental laboratory instruction is essential.

At minimum, candidates must be within three months of graduation for a bachelor's degree in physics or a related field at the time of application. Preferred applicants will have prior experience working in an instructional lab and with scientific laboratory techniques; knowledge of computer systems, software and hardware common to instructional laboratories; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and knowledge of managing inventory and procuring supplies for instructional labs.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team leading a survey on LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) physicists, graduate students in the field of physics education research, and additional projects as decided by the PER research group at the University of Utah. Summary	The Physics Department is seeking a Lecturer to join their team!  This is a one-year faculty replacement in the Department of Physics for the 2019-2020 academic year. Duties include teaching 15 semester credit hours in both the Fall and Spring terms. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach a variety of physics courses including lab courses, general education, service and major courses. The position is non-renewable.
Required Qualifications	Graduation from an accredited institution with a Masters degree in physics is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities	Expert knowledge in physics and competence in physics pedagogy. Ability to communicate the ideas of physics in a compelling and instructive manner. Ability to work well with students of varying abilities. Competence in the use of academic course management systems and other office technologies. Competence in the use of laboratory equipment used in undergraduate physics laboratories. Ability to write and design undergraduate physics labs.
Preferred Qualifications	Graduation from an accredited institution with a PhD in physics or closely related field preferred. Demonstrable experience teaching undergraduate physics.
Physical Requirements	Frequent standing, sitting, and walking, as well as frequent fine hand manipulation associated with using a computer. Continuous need to see, hear, and speak.

Term Instructor, University of Minnesota Duluth

UMD Physics and Astronomy department is seeking a term faculty hire at either rank of Instructor (job code 9404) or Assistant Professor (job code 9403), depending on qualifications.  This is a faculty position for one academic year.
