Title:               Postdoctoral Research Associate

Purpose: To develop professionally as a future science education faculty member and/or researcher. This position will advance an NSF-funded project to motivate interest in STEM topics by allowing Minecraft users to ask “What if?” questions about the Earth, such as “What if the Moon didn’t exist?” or “What if the Earth was a moon,” and explore the consequences of these variation in the popular video game Minecraft.  The project also seeks to provide educational opportunities related to the search for exoplanets, addressing questions of detecting exoplanets and determining their habitability.  The selected candidate will be charged with creating models and supporting the implementation of Minecraft versions of fictional and known planets.  Specifically, this postdoc position will be tasked with providing: calculations, observed evidence (from other researchers), and possibly simulations, for the targeted worlds to be built in Minecraft.    

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Take descriptive versions of alternative Earths and quantify the changes compared to the default version of Earth.  Furthermore, the equations/descriptions of the changes need to be derived in a flexible format.  For example, if the Earth was the moon of a larger world, the equations describing this system must allow for the larger world to have a range of masses and for the Earth to orbit at different distances.

·         Provide suggestions as to how these alternative worlds can be implemented in Minecraft.  In particular, propose how these alternative Minecraft versions of Earth would differ from the default Earth presented in Minecraft. 

·         The actual implementation of these new worlds will primarily be done by collaborators, but the postdoc is expected to participate in this part of the project, as required.

·         Maintain records of all calculations, as well as descriptions of all relevant equations and variables.

·         Use Minecraft on the University of Maine and/or on the UIUC computer to explore and verify the accuracy of these alternative worlds.

·         Work with collaborators, including researchers at the UIUC, CU-Boulder, and PBS Nova to provide subject-matter expertise with regard to the models created and astrophysics generally.

·         Co-author papers and/or presentations on this work.

·         Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.

·         Mentor graduate and/or undergraduate students as appropriate.

 

Knowledge and Skills Qualifications: 

Required:

·         Ph.D. Astronomy or in Science Education with experience in related fields.  

·         Ability to communicate effectively both at the scientific level and with colleagues in the field of education. 

Preferred:

·         Experience with Minecraft.  

·         Preference will be given to candidates with some training in and/or experience with education outreach. 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: Possible interaction with students interested in voluntarily exploring these Minecraft worlds.

 

Work Environment: Work will be performed in an office in Bennett Hall.

 

Work Year: Full time.

 

Work Schedule: Normal University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.  Occasional work outside normal business hours may be necessary.

 

Position Type: Initial appointment one year with renewal up to two additional years, contingent on funding and performance.

 

Schedule for Evaluation: In accordance with the UMPSA agreement.

Eckerd College, the only independent national liberal arts college in Florida, has a tradition of innovative education and excellence in teaching and mentoring. The Physics Discipline at Eckerd College invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor for one year with the possibility of renew for a second year beginning in the fall of 2021 to join us in this tradition: teaching two sections of calculus-based introductory physics courses in the Fall and Spring semesters, including labs. Our introductory sequence reaches well beyond students in our discipline: most come from other majors in the Natural Sciences Collegium, predominantly from Marine Sciences and Biology. Each section is capped at 24 students and each faculty member uses a class structure and teaching style that they are most comfortable with.

We are also seeking a candidate who can help develop at least one project to promote diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in STEM at Eckerd and/or help build a pathway to STEM for local students from underrepresented groups. The candidate will get a course release during Eckerd's one month Winter Term to work on either building or reimagining DEI alliances in collaboration with other Eckerd faculty. Eckerd has just become a charter member of SEA Change (https://seachange.aaas.org) and is developing a strategic plan that envisions a more meaningful connection to the local community with a focus on DEI. The candidate is not expected to advise student research, though it will be encouraged if time and interest allow.

The Physics Discipline is composed of four faculty members, one of whom has a joint appointment with the Mathematics Discipline. The offices and classrooms of the discipline are all housed in the same building, along with the Computer Science and Mathematics disciplines, and machine shop. We have a student-run Makerspace overseen by physics faculty and, prior to COVID-19, we ran a residential science camp for middle school students (70 students/wk for two weeks). A Reflective Service Learning course is a graduation requirement and science students have done outreach to local schools and Science Festivals as a part of their service.

The Physics Education Research Laboratory at the University of Maine is still searching for applicants for two separate postdoctoral research associate positions in physics education research — now with a revised (and flexible) tentative starting date of May 1, 2021 (due to pandemic-related delays). We are excited to have two postdocs join our active research group in physics education at the same time so they can benefit not only from interacting with the group overall but also with one another. 

The first postdoc (https://umaine.hiretouch.com/job-details?jobID=63683&job=postdoctoral-research-associate) will work on a multi-institutional collaboration that aims to integrate findings and models from cognitive science (particularly those related to dual-process theories of reasoning) into research-based curriculum development efforts in physics in order to maximize their efficacy.  The postdoc will be mentored by MacKenzie Stetzer (University of Maine), in collaboration with Andrew Boudreaux (Western Washington University), Paula Heron (University of Washington), Mila Kryjevskaia (North Dakota State University), and Beth Lindsey (Penn State Greater Allegheny).

The second postdoc (https://umaine.hiretouch.com/job-details?jobID=63684&job=postdoctoral-research-associate) will work on a multi-institutional collaboration implementing a coordinated program of research and instructional materials development centered on students’ use of and reasoning about key mathematical topics in upper-division physics courses. The postdoc will be mentored by John Thompson (University of Maine), in collaboration with Michael Loverude (California State University - Fullerton) and Warren Christensen (North Dakota State University).

Both postdocs will be based at UMaine but work with collaborators remotely.  Due to the pandemic, a remote start is possible, but the postdocs would be expected to relocate to UMaine when feasible.

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Physics and Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics at Cornell University. The successful candidate will participate in a project to evaluate student framing in non-traditional instructional physics labs.

 

 

Job description:

 

The successful candidate will take a leading role in the collection and analysis of video and written data of students working on group lab activities, particularly to evaluate evidence of student framing over time. The successful candidate will be advised by Prof. Natasha Holmes and work collaboratively with several graduate and undergraduate students on the project, joining a collaboration with researchers at Tufts University (David Hammer) and the University of Washington-Bothell (Rachel Scherr).

 

Discipline-based education research is growing at Cornell, with faculty and collaborators in physics, biology, and other STEM fields, as well as a number of teaching postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students across disciplines. The physics education researchers, led by Holmes, includes 1-2 postdocs, 4-5 graduate students, and 2-3 undergraduate researchers. We also collaborate extensively with biology education researchers, led by Prof. Michelle Smith in the department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, including 4 postdocs, 2 graduate students, and 3 undergraduates. Together, we hold joint group meetings and journal club discussions and collaborate on several funded projects. Thus, as a postdoc in the group, the successful candidate would be well-supported in their research efforts, connecting with an interdisciplinary group of discipline-based education researchers.

Multiple Fixed-Term Assistant Professor Positions, Michigan State

 Michigan State University’s Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering (CMSE) invites applications for several Fixed-term Assistant Professor positions with a starting date of Fall 2021. These new positions are currently set to be a 2 course per semester teaching load with the possibility of a reduction to 1 course per semester. Instructional courses taught in CMSE focus on computational modeling and/or data science. Successful candidates will receive training in research-based teaching pedagogy, will have the opportunity to perform research in collaboration with CMSE faculty members, and will be able to participate in a range of additional professional development opportunities. These positions are potentially renewable on an annual basis through Spring 2024, contingent upon satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. in any field of mathematics, science, or engineering by August 15, 2021, as well as have substantial experience in computational or data science, which may include the development of numerical algorithms or their application to a particular field of study. Applicants are also expected to be able to program using Python, R, or a sufficiently similar language. In addition, previous teaching experience (either as a TA or instructor) is desired. Candidates are expected to develop a robust research program that includes external funding and scholarly productivity, teach departmental courses, and mentor departmental undergraduate and graduate (masters and doctoral) students. Additionally, faculty will have opportunities to supervise Ph.D. students in the Joint Doctoral Program in Mathematics and Science Education (MSED, http://www.sci.sdsu.edu/CRMSE/msed/home.html), offered with the University of California at San Diego. We are also looking for a colleague to join our large group of mathematics and science educators, from the College of Sciences and the College of Education, who conduct collaborative research through the Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education (CRMSE, https://education.sdsu.edu/crmse). 


Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field, and postdoctoral experience is preferred. A strong record of scholarship is required. The candidate will be expected to establish and grow an externally funded research program resulting in peer-reviewed publications with SDSU undergraduate and graduate students. Disciplinary expertise for teaching majors courses at the undergraduate level is required. TT PER at Ryerson Polytechnic in Toronto, Canada

 Tenure Track Position in Physics Pedagogy 

Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the  territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Physics in the Faculty of Science at Ryerson University invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Physics Pedagogy.  The appointment shall be effective 1 July 2021, subject to final budgetary approval. 

This position is an integral part of the Faculty of Science Strategic Plan to create a world-class group in Science Education Research, beginning with a cluster of four positions, one in each of Computer Science, Chemistry/Biology, Mathematics and Physics departments. In addition to being part of the new cluster in Science Education, the successful applicant will join the present strong core of physicists in the Department of Physics with research interests in Medical Physics and Complex Systems. With this position, the Department is expanding into Physics Education Research (PER). As such, we invite applicants with expertise in Physics Education Research who have demonstrated exceptional levels of excellence in teaching Science courses as well as the development of novel undergraduate laboratories and curricula based on present day PER research. 

The successful candidate will: contribute to our undergraduate and graduate programs through teaching [physics and/or astronomy courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels], mentor and supervise undergraduate and graduate students; contribute to the development of curricula and course design; develop a strong and innovative research program in Physics Education Research that is externally funded and that produces cutting-edge, high quality results; and engage in the life of the Department, Faculty and University through service activities while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities.

 

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field. In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of: 

  • strong emerging scholarly research and/or creative activity that is current, innovative and impactful as evidenced by, but not limited to, peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, community and professional work, grants, research related awards and other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline; 
  • practical experience in research, applications and development of material related to physics education research; 
  • meaningful engagement of undergraduate and graduate students in their proposed research; 
  • demonstrated potential for teaching excellence at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum, as evidenced by a teaching dossier that includes a teaching philosophy statement, experience with course and curriculum review and/or development, examples of best practices in pedagogy, including familiarity with a variety of contemporary, research-based teaching practices techniques, and emerging technologies for instruction, effective use of classroom technology and any experience with experiential learning, sample syllabi, strong teaching evaluations, teaching awards, and other relevant achievements in teaching;
  • strong communication and expository skills and a demonstrated ability to supervise undergraduate students; 
  • enthusiasm about teaching physics and/or astronomy classes at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, including general education courses and physics majors’ courses;
  • endorsements/recommendations by recognized referees;
  • experience and interest in upper-division PER and/or educational technologies – as they apply to online/remote teaching and learning as well as the development of online (virtual) undergraduate laboratories;

PER Postdoc, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

University of Illinois - Postdoctoral Research Associate in Physics Education Research


Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate in Physics Education Research

(PER) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (U of I). The work of the University of

Illinois PER Group bridges fundamental principles of physics cognition, learning, and

understanding with large-scale, classroom implementation.


The primary duties of this position will be to work on a collaborative team that manages and

conducts research on the Illinois Physics and Secondary Schools (IPaSS) Partnership program

(https://ipass.physics.illinois.edu/). The IPaSS program is an NSF-funded project that brings

together high school physics teachers with U of I personnel to develop and implement high-

quality, high school physics instruction. The research project investigates three strands: (1)

program impact on teacher professional development and practice, (2) program impact on

student learning and post-secondary pursuit of STEM careers, and (3) adaptation of university

physics curricula to high school physics settings. The IPaSS team consists of Tim Stelzer (PI),

Eric Kuo, Maggie Mahmood, Morten Lundsgaard, and Rebecca Wiltfong.


The preferred start date is Summer 2021. The position is a full-time, 12-month appointment

that may be extended up to a maximum of three years. Candidates are expected to have

earned or be close to earning a Ph.D. in Physics Education Research, Science Education,

Learning Sciences, or a related field.


Duties:

 Help shape the development of project research strands

 Collaborate on project data collection and analysis

 Co-develop and support professional development program activities

 Present research through conference presentations and journal articles

 There are also opportunities to get involved on other projects in the U of I PER group.


Desired qualifications:

 Knowledge of science teacher professional development models and current trends

 Experience with quantitative research methods, including experimental or within-

subjects designs

 Experience with qualitative research methods, including video analysis in STEM

classroom/teacher professional development settings or interviewing

 Experience working in collaborative teams on projects with high logistical demands

 Strong writing, communication, and/or presentation skills

 Capacity and interest in supporting undergraduate and graduate student research.
