Michigan State University invites applications for a fixed-term, part-time, one-year Physics Lab Academic Specialist position in Lyman Briggs College (LBC), an undergraduate science and liberal arts community (http://lbc.msu.edu).

The candidate will teach 2 sections of Lyman Briggs Physics 1 (LB 273) during the Fall 2021 semester and 1 section of Lyman Briggs Physics 2 (LB274) during the Spring 2022 semester, which is a calculus-based physics course sequence for science majors in the Lyman Briggs College

 Both physics classes are done IN PERSON in a studio style, meaning lecture and lab are combined into one 4-credit hour course per section. Course times for the two sections in Fall 2021 are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:10am-12:00pm and 3:00-4:50pm. Course times for the one section in the Spring 2022 semester are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 10:20am - 12:10pm.

 The physics sequence blends mechanics and thermodynamics (physics 1), electricity, magnetism, and optics (physics 2) content with computational activities, biological applications, and considerations of physics, race and gender.

 The candidate will implement the BLiSS Physics curriculum in coordination with a team of 2 additional faculty members and an instructional team of two graduate teaching assistants and several undergraduate learning assistants.

Required qualifications

Candidates must have a PhD in physics, astronomy, physics education, or a related field.

     Previous experience in undergraduate-focused teaching

     Experience working on teaching teams and with modeling curriculum or other current research-based teaching pedagogies

 The Physics Education Research Group at the University of Utah (PERU) seeks to hire a post-doctoral scholar studying the professional networks of women and gender and sexual minority physicists (LGBT) working across academia, the government, and private sectors. This work will include conducting interviews, policy analysis, and further qualitative work at the University of Utah. This position is a one-year contract with an additional two-year renewal depending on performance. Further renewals will be dependent on performance and funding. The position is open until filled with a preferred start date of September 1st. The successful candidate will work in person at The University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT. This position is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Postdoctoral Research Associate in Physics Education Research Math Problem Solving 2021-2022

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate in Physics Education Research (PER) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (U of I). The work of the University of Illinois PER Group bridges fundamental principles of physics cognition, learning, and understanding with large-scale, classroom implementation.

The primary duties of this position will be to work on research projects at the intersection of physics problem solving, mathematical reasoning, and causal reasoning in university physics contexts. This postdoc will work primarily with Prof. Eric Kuo, but there will be opportunities to interface more broadly with the University of Illinois PER group.

The preferred start window is Summer 2021. The position is a full-time, 12-month appointment that may be extended up to a maximum of two years. Candidates are expected to have earned or be close to earning a Ph.D. in Physics Education Research, Science Education, Learning Sciences, or a related field.

Duties:

·         Help shape the development of project research strands

·         Lead aspects of project design, data collection, analysis, and project management

·         Collaborate with faculty, postdocs, graduate, and undergraduate students

·         Present research through conference presentations and journal articles

·         There are also opportunities to get involved on other projects in the U of I PER group.

Desirable qualifications (candidates need not have all of these):

·         Knowledge of the research literature on mathematical reasoning, problem solving, and/or causal reasoning.

We aim to find instructors to teach the two semesters of our algebra-based introductory physics seminar sequence with laboratory, as well as a one-semester intermediate seminar course covering classical and quantum waves (either in the fall or spring). The Faculty Director will assume a leadership role in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) and be responsible for both articulating the centrality of inclusive pedagogies in our teaching mission and elevating the profile of pedagogy on campus. The Faculty Director will manage the alignment of the Center’s programming with the core mission of teaching excellence in the FAS. They will ensure that the Center’s diverse portfolio of programs and services is deeply connected to the priorities of key FAS stakeholders, including the development of all who teach in this Faculty. The Faculty Director will establish organizational mechanisms that ensure accountability to key stakeholders, particularly Harvard College and the GSAS.

The Faculty Director will collaborate with the leadership of the FAS, including the Deans of Harvard College and the GSAS, in establishing goals for the Bok Center, and with the Center’s staff will develop a full range of programs and services to achieve those goals. The Faculty Director and staff of the Bok Center will support the FAS faculty to develop inclusive pedagogy and equitable course design practices, which enables learning enriched by the full range of experiences, perspectives, and ideas in the classroom. The Faculty Director and staff of the Bok Center will support the FAS faculty in introducing into their courses new educational methods and tools, and assessment of their success in teaching undergraduate and graduate students. The Faculty Director and staff of the Bok Center will provide support for GSAS students to develop into innovative teachers and effective communicators. The Faculty Director will also broaden and deepen the Bok Center’s function as disseminator of relevant and significant research on teaching and learning within the FAS.

Working closely with the Executive Director of the Bok Center, who manages operations and the everyday work of the staff, the Faculty Director will be responsible for the organization and financial health of the Center. In addition, the Faculty Director will oversee research undertaken by Bok Center staff and will play a central role in guiding efforts to develop meaningful mechanisms for measuring the effectiveness of pedagogical innovations.

The Faculty Director will report to the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. They will work closely with the academic deans of the FAS, including the Dean of Harvard College and the Dean of the GSAS, and will serve on standing committees of the faculty, as appropriate.


Basic Qualifications

A PhD degree, a record of influence in national conversations about pedagogical innovation in higher education, and demonstrated leadership and management skills are required.
