Assistant Lecturer at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology

Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology is a progressive higher education institution offering a wide range of courses at Higher Certificate (Level 6), Ordinary Degree (Level 7), Honours Degree(Level 8), Masters Degree (Level 9) and Doctorate Degree (Level 10) in specialist areas to full and part-time students. At present the Institute has approximately 9,000 students enrolled in a range of full, part-time and access courses and is developing so as to meet the educational challenges of the future. GMIT currently runs a degree programme in Physics & Instrumentation.

The role involves teaching both theory and practical sessions of various modules in the Physics & Instrumentation degree, and the continuing development of programmes under the general heading of Physics & Instrumentation. This covers core topics at first year through to the specialised disciplines in the award year.

The successful candidate will also be required to supervise projects at degree level. As well as the requisite technical skills, results from teamwork, demonstrable skills in project management and most importantly, empathy for learners, should all be evident in the track record of the candidate.

REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum:
An Honours degree (2.2 or higher) in a Physics or Instrumentation Level 8 degree [as specified in the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ)] or equivalent.
Three years relevant post-qualification experience.
The recommended candidate must also pass a medical examination prior to taking up duty.
Desirable:
Specialisation in the following areas: instrumentation, physics, electronics, automation.
Post-graduate qualification.
Relevant teaching, course design, and/or research experience.
Supervision of projects at undergraduate level and post-graduate level.
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Good interpersonal skills and an ability to work in teams.
Relevant experience in an industrial field.
