Instructor at Irvine Valley College

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES
Instruct a variety of lower-division physical science courses that include Introduction to Physics sequence (non-calculus-based) and General Physics sequences (calculus-based). Additional assignments may include instruction of Astronomy classes. Assist in the development and implementation of physics curriculum. Participate in general faculty functions related to the educational program in Physical Sciences, college committees, in-service programs, professional development, and other contractual requirements. Develop proficiency and maintain competency in the use of computer applications used in teaching. Assignments may include evening and/or weekend courses and locations other than the main campus. Maintain knowledge of and ability to successfully integrate computer technology in the classroom, and ability to offer curriculum and instruction through distance education delivery means as appropriate. Perform other duties as contractually required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate must meet one of the following criteria:
* Master's degree in physics, astronomy or astrophysics from an accredited college or university; OR
* Bachelor's degree in physics or astronomy from an accredited college or university AND Master's degree or higher in engineering, mathematics, meteorology or geophysics from an accredited college or university; OR
* A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of items 1 or 2 above (candidates making application on the basis of equivalency must submit the Supplemental Application for Equivalency Determination form in addition to all other required materials); OR
* Valid California Community College Instructor credential, appropriate to the subject, per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990).

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
* Minimum of two (2) years full-time (or part-time equivalent) recent, successful experience teaching physics lecture and laboratory at the community college and/or university level.
* Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to those candidates demonstrating a high level of professional expertise on the basis of:
* An earned Ph.D. in physics from an accredited college or university.
* Experience teaching calculus-based and/or non-calculus-bases physics sequence at the college level.
* Established skills in communicating effectively with students and colleagues.
* Knowledge of and ability to integrate computer technology in the classroom and to offer curriculum and instruction through diverse distance modes of delivery, as appropriate.
* Evidence of an understanding of the diverse ways in which the needs of students are met on a college campus, including through faculty leadership positions, committee representation, and collaboration at the department, school, college, and District levels.
