The Department of Physics at Smith College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Physics at the Assistant Professor level, starting Fall 2013. The candidate should have a Ph.D., be able to offer a strong research program in experimental physics readily accessible to undergraduates, and be well versed in research-based physics pedagogy. Significant equipment start-up funds, ongoing access to a departmentally administered equipment endowment, and newly renovated lab space adjacent to a well-equipped and staffed design/fab machine shop are all available.

Located in Western Massachusetts, Smith College is a leader in the education of women and has an outstanding record in the number of professional women physicists who are alumnae. The Five College Consortium, comprised of Smith, Mount Holyoke, Amherst, and Hampshire Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, provides a rich intellectual and cultural life for faculty and students, as well as additional opportunities in teaching and research. Visit http://www.smith.edu/deanoffaculty/facultypositions.html to apply. Submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, names and contact information for three references, a research plan detailing how students could participate, and a statement detailing your teaching experience and methods. Each of your references should upload a confidential letter of recommendation as well. Top candidates will be invited to prepare (1) a 2-3 minute cellphone-quality video illustration how they would address a common misconception in introductory physics on a topic of their choice and (2) a written in-class question they would use as follow-up to gauge student understanding. Application deadline is October 1st, 2012.
