Postdoctoral Associate – Science Education Research – Michigan Technological University

Michigan Technological University (Houghton, MI) is searching for a Postdoctoral Associate specializing in assessment of learning and motivation in STEM education. The candidate will help to oversee the final phases of development of a new, reform-based, middle-school science curriculum; manage the review and pilot testing of that curriculum; and conduct associated research. This position will be available for up to two years and is supported by a grant from the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation. The successful candidate will work with a team of scientists, engineers, and teachers to develop, implement, and document the impact of the new science curriculum. Applicants are expected to have completed a PhD prior to their intended start date. The successful candidate will have experience in educational research and/or evaluation methods, a desire to collaborate across disciplines, and an interest in studying the effects of reform-based curriculum on student motivation and academic performance in science. The successful candidate will be expected to prepare academic publications, supervise graduate students drawn from multiple academic disciplines, work independently and as part of a team, and manage multiple competing deadlines. Preference will be given to applicants whose qualifications include one or more of the following: experience with assessment of science content and practices, STEM-education related research and publication history, experience with the Next Generation Science Standards, familiarity with statistical techniques such as regression-based and matching methods, and capability to work collaboratively with pre-college educators. Good time-management skills and diplomatic demeanor are essential qualities.

Responsibilities of the position will include:
•       Oversee the completion of development of a new, reform-based curriculum,
•       Manage the review and pilot testing processes for the new curriculum,
•       Assist  in the design of three-dimensional assessments of student capabilities in science practices, content knowledge, and cross-cutting concepts
•       Assist in the design and implementation of research related to student and teacher learning,
•       Coordinate with participating school districts throughout the state of Michigan,
•       Publish research papers in peer‐reviewed journals,
•       Assist with new proposal development,
•       Supervise graduate students’ project-related work,
•       Work together effectively with staff and faculty from multiple institutions.

Required qualifications:
•       PhD in learning sciences, STEM education, or equivalent experience,
•       Research and/or evaluation experience in STEM education,
•       Demonstrated experience with relevant statistical methods,
•       Demonstrated success with publishing research papers,
•       Willingness to travel occasionally within Michigan.
