Position Information

The Department of Physics at California State University Chico is seeking a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Physics to begin August of 2021. Our department’s mission is to provide the highest quality undergraduate education in Physics, and we are looking for someone who shares our deep love of teaching and mentoring undergraduates, both in the classroom and in research.

Minimum Education and Experience

The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a Ph.D in
Physics or closely related field. Proficiency in written and oral English is required. Candidates nearing completion
of the doctorate may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the degree must be met no later than August 17, 2021. Candidates must show high potential for providing undergraduates with research
experiences and strong commitment to undergraduate education.

Additional Requirements and Responsibilities for this position

Additional Requirements: This tenure-track position carries responsibilities in the areas of teaching at the undergraduate level (this is primary), scholarship and professional development, and service to the Department, University and community. Teaching duties will include teaching introductory physics courses in dedicated studio classrooms and
teaching core upper-division physics courses. The promise of being able to successfully mentor undergraduates in
Physics research will be given considerable weight in selection of this hire. The candidate must address the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through course materials and teaching strategies.

Recruitment Preferences

Preference will be given to candidates with a documented commitment to evidence based undergraduate teaching practice and a high potential for providing undergraduates with research experiences. Previous teaching experience beyond Teaching Assistantship is not required; the Department will consider other indications such as professional memberships in teaching organizations and familiarity with modern
physics teaching techniques and emerging instructional technologies. We highly value experience with and commitment to service in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion in physics and/or STEM in general. Therefore, we strongly encourage applications from candidates who have a record of such activities, whether or not this
service was formally required by previous positions. Applicants should have awareness of and sensitivity to educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training,
teaching and other comparable experience.
