The College of Applied Science at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for two full-time tenure-track Faculty positions in Physics to begin in September of 2009 and 2010 respectively.
The College of Applied Science is a fully accredited baccalaureate college with an international reputation for delivering innovative education in science and technology. The Mathematics and Physics Department currently numbers 27 full-time faculty and provides Mathematics and Physics courses in support of the College programs. The primary focus of the Mathematics & Physics Department is teaching. These are nine-month appointments with the possible opportunity to teach during alternating summers or part-time every summer. The positions require a minimum of a Masters degree in Physics and experience in teaching in higher education within this discipline. The candidate must be willing to teach undergraduate Physics classes in both the day and evening as part of the regular load, as well as possibly manage the operation of the Physics Laboratory.
Since these are full-time teaching positions, an ability to demonstrate teaching excellence will be required. Ability to cooperate with other Faculty Members in offering sections of common courses is necessary. Excellent oral and written communications skills are required. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal professionally, effectively, and courteously with faculty, students, staff, administrators, and the public are required. Other duties will include advising/ counseling students, participating in scholarly and professional activities and serving on department, college and university committees. PhD Studentship in ‘Open Science' Public Engagement
We are seeking a motivated graduate to undertake an exciting and innovative interdisciplinary research project. Open Science Public Engagement offers the potential to bring together, in a new way, open science, and public engagement. Open science is an approach in which the whole of an ongoing scientific investigation and its data are made available for anyone to follow, analyse and potentially contribute to. If the (open) science project is of a kind which could be understandable and accessible to a wide range of people, including non-specialists, this opens up the possibility of combining open science and public engagement aspects in a fruitful and symbiotic way. Public engagement therefore potentially becomes integral and beneficial to the experimental methodology.
The studentship is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and will involve collaboration with two innovative research teams. The Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) is the largest multi-disciplinary robotics research group in the UK. BRL is a collaborative research partnership funded by the University of Bristol, the University of the West of England and HEFCE. The Science Communication Unit (SCU) based at UWE, Bristol, has over ten years of international experience in engaging publics with science and technology in innovative and interesting formats.
The aim of this PhD studentship will be to explore and develop the idea of Open Science Public Engagement. The student will investigate its principles using a case study approach. Potential case studies to draw on may include public and commercial research sectors. For example, two existing projects at the BRL, The Emergence of Artificial Culture in Robot Societies and Symbrion, both have strong open science aspects. It is expected that the research project will incorporate an active creation of an open science public engagement activity as part of the PhD programme, in order to provide a platform for investigation. Furthermore, open science may have ramifications and concerns for scientists, researchers and funders involved in this novel research methodology.
The ideal candidate will be open to new ideas, have a willingness to engage in interdisciplinary work and be an excellent communicator. We are seeking candidates who have a sound scientific background and/or science communication experience. An insight into social science methods would be desirable but is not essential.

TT at Florida International

The PERG has successfully built a multi-level research and learning community consisting of high school teachers and students, undergraduate and graduate students, and faculty, thus transforming the model for physics education outreach. The education reform is centered around inquiry-based Modeling Instruction, both at the high school and undergraduate levels. The PERG builds on this inquiry model with several coherent projects, including CHEPREO (www.chepreo.org), PhysTEC, and the NSF Noyce Program, as part of its efforts to reform physics and physics education at FIU while developing a dissemination model for sustained education reform. The group currently consists of three faculty (from the Physics and the Curriculum & Instruction Departments) plus three staff members and graduate students. Major responsibilities. Faculty who assume these positions will conduct research and inquiry and teach undergraduate, masters, and doctoral courses. Additional duties will vary depending on departmental placement and rank, university and academic unit education needs, and the candidate's experience and interest. Faculty will be involved in continuing efforts to foster collaborations among the College of Education, other departments and unit on campus, and the K-12 community. These are academic year positions with a proposed starting date of Fall 2009.
Qualifications. All candidates are expected to have an earned doctorate including emphasis in science education, a record of scholarly accomplishment through publication and success in obtaining and leading externally funded projects appropriate to stage in academic career, and participation in interdisciplinary work. National leadership in science education initiatives is desirable, evidence of capacity to contribute to the intellectual, research, and instructional life of MSU is essential.

Primary teaching responsibilities will include introductory courses in physics, physical science, and astronomy. The ability to teach meteorology is also desired. Participates in curriculum development and maintenance. A Master's degree in Physics, Astronomy, or related field, is required.
