Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach physics and to participate in the teaching of non-majors science courses. Preference will be given to candidates who can also teach other areas of science and math. Other responsibilities include developing an externally-funded research program involving significant participation of undergraduate students, professional activity, and service to both the University and community. Current research areas of emphasis at JCSU include bioinformatics, biotechnology, cyber security, robotics, and renewable energy. The faculty member will be required to evaluate and use current technology in courses and to maintain a positive educational relationship with students and colleagues. Specialist in Educational Simulation Design and Use for the PhET Interactive Simulations project at University of Colorado Boulder

The PhET Interactive Simulations Project (http://phet.colorado.edu) at the University of Colorado Boulder has an opening for a full- or part-time Professional Research Assistant position with a focus on simulation design and testing as well as teacher professional development around simulation use. The PhET Team designs and develops interactive simulations (sims) for teaching and learning science and math, creates activities that couple with the sims, and makes all of these resources freely available to educators and students on the web. Research - at both K12 and college levels - is a major component of the PhET Project, and focuses on understanding aspects of design and use that lead to increases in student learning and student engagement.

PhET is currently engaged in several initiatives: building and studying simulations for middle school math and science, advancing our teacher professional development resources and support system, branching into tablet and touch-compatible simulation design, and advancing the use of simulations in undergraduate chemistry.

The successful applicant will join the vibrant and productive PhET team. The responsibilities will grow as the applicant becomes familiar with the project, and will include:

1. Redesigning (as part of a 3-5 person team) existing PhET simulations, incorporating new findings on effective sim design and adapting designs for use on touch-devices. (Software programming is NOT required. PhET has a team of in-house software developers).
2. Designing new PhET simulations
3. Conducting user-testing through interviews of students using simulations
4. Supporting simulation design, development, and research efforts - e.g. analyzing data, supporting classroom research studies, searching for web resources, etc.
5. Helping to liaison to and support the K12 community.
6. Assisting with marketing and dissemination of PhET resources to teachers: develop and represent PhET in online teaching forums and resources; run exhibit booths at national and local conferences; assist with teacher workshops.
7. Responding to inquiries to PhET about science/math questions and new simulation ideas

Part-time candidates must be able to work at least 20 hours per week.

The successful candidate will work at the University of Colorado Boulder which is a national leader in STEM education with over 50 campus programs addressing STEM education and a new Center for Science Learning launched in 2012. John Brown University, private, evangelical, and Christian, seeks a full-time faculty member in Physics to begin August 1, 2014. RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for teaching lower division physics courses for science and liberal arts majors as well as upper division physics courses. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. Involving undergraduate students in research projects and development of a research program, participation in the ongoing development of the physics program, service to the University, and academic advising are all required.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related discipline by August 2014 is required. Postdoctoral teaching and research experience are preferred. Job Summary:

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Regular/contract instructors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the visions, missions and values of the college and District. This position will have primary responsibility for developing and maintaining a state-of-the-art program in physics for the department, and will include development, implementation and articulation of curriculum, hiring part-time instructors, and developing and executing grants. The department has a commitment to the use of technology in education and to integrate curriculum between related scientific disciplines including biology, chemistry, earth sciences, and engineering wherever possible. It is expected that this position will support and help to grow the department in this area. This position may include a combination of day and evening assignments, large lectures and small seminars, and is being offered by a college strongly committed to the "open door" concept serving a diverse student population. Instructors will be expected to perform other duties consistent with their faculty job description as stated in the faculty contract.

CHARACTERISTICS OF ASSIGNMENT:
1) Teach lecture and laboratory classes in physics for engineering majors, science majors and general education courses in physics and physical science.
2) Develop curricula and innovative teaching materials for physics courses at all levels.
3) Work with physics students to further development of study skills in science classes.
4) Participate in Department of Science & Engineering planning and decision-making including preparation and implementation of operational, planning, growth and budgetary strategies.
5) Participate in the shared governance process and serve on college committees.
6) Advise students regarding degree requirements and career opportunities in physics.
7) Work with college articulation officer to articulate physics courses with transfer institutions.
8) Provide academic assistance to the students outside of class (e.g., during office hours), and participate in out of class activities such as club sponsorship, supervision of independent projects, and development of workshops to better prepare students for academic success.  

Minimum Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: APPLICANTS MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
Master's in physics, astronomy or astrophysics OR Bachelor's in physics or astronomy AND Master's in engineering, mathematics, meteorology or geophysics OR a current California Community College Credential that permits full-time service as a Physics Instructor OR the equivalent. NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:
1) Academic preparation for teaching and developing curriculum in Physics for non-majors, Physics for science majors, and Physics for Engineering majors at a community college. Preferred academic preparation is a Masters or Ph.D. in physics.
2) A minimum of two years teaching experience at the college level that must include teaching either engineering series physics courses or science major's series physics courses.
3) Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate physics and physical science concepts to students at all levels, including experience teaching in an active and collaborative learning environment
4) Experience with the use of laboratory equipment and instruments common to physics teaching environments.
5) Demonstrated involvement in physics department activities sufficient to prepare the candidate as the lead instructor in physics, including experience in academic processes such as curriculum development, program review & planning, or SLO (Student Learning Outcomes) development and assessment.
6) Evidence of a strong commitment to remain technically current in physics, and associated sciences.
7) Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
8) Demonstrated commitment and ability to work effectively and professionally with colleagues at all levels.
9) Skills and experience to motivate students from a broad spectrum of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, language, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
10) Sensitivity to, and an understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, language, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.

4) Evidence of satisfactory leadership skills that will contribute to overall department growth and success.
5) Prior experience in project management and resource development, especially grant development and administration.
