The Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning, and Equity (SCALE) at the Stanford University Graduate School of Education seeks a post-doctoral fellow to work with Dr. Ray Pecheone and Dr. Susan Schultz. SCALE provides technical consulting and support to schools, districts, and states that have committed to adopting performance-based assessment as part of a multiple-measures system to evaluate student learning and measure school and teacher effectiveness. Primary responsibilities of the STEM Instructional Design Consultant include:
  • Consulting with individual STEM faculty, departments, and schools on instructional design issues.
  • Implementing programmatic activities for instructional support by planning and assisting in the delivery of orientations, workshops, and presentations. Developing web/print materials on teaching for internal and external distribution. Providing online and classroom teaching feedback services including observation and student focus groups.
  • Consulting with faculty, academic staff and academic units on instruction, course design, teaching methods,   assessment of student learning, course evaluation and curriculum planning.
  • Managing projects funded by Center for Teaching and Learning grant programs. Assisting faculty awardees with determining appropriate project timeline, monitoring progress to ensure the project is on track, and communicating regularly with faculty to ensure they are receiving support as needed from the CTL.
  • Demonstrating a scholarly approach to studying issues in teaching and learning or faculty development. 
  • Contributing to program planning and other maintenance needs of the unit.
  • Pursuing professional development through reading, conference attendance and other strategies.
  • Performing other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Required qualifications include an earned doctorate in a STEM field with a concentration in education. Preferred qualifications include experience in faculty development and 1-3 years of college teaching experience.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities: Excellent communication and organizational skills. Ability to work in a team and with a diverse group of people. Ability to meet strict deadlines, deal with frequent interruptions, manage stress of competing demands for time, and accomplish several concurrent tasks effectively.

FT at Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts

The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts (ASMSA), a campus of the University of Arkansas System, invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a variety of ten-month, full-time openings beginning August 2014.  Instructors in biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, and mathematics will play critical roles in the development and launch of ASMSA's STEM Pathways digital learning program.

The pilot program will offer Advanced Placement and pre-AP coursework in STEM disciplines to students throughout Arkansas via a blend of synchronous and asynchronous instruction.  The experience also includes a monthly weekend lab session to build on course concepts in an advanced setting.  Digital learning faculty will also have the opportunity to collaborate with ASMSAs residential program.
ASMSA is a public, residential high school for academically talented and motivated eleventh and twelfth grade students from across Arkansas. In 2013, ASMSA was ranked 13th nationally and 9th in the South in Newsweek and The Daily Beasts annual survey of Americas Best High Schools.
A Masters degree in the area of instruction is required.  Experience in teaching AP courses and a demonstrable record of success in preparing students for AP exams is an asset. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in working with gifted students, teaching through technology, developing interdisciplinary curriculum, team planning skills, and problem solving skills.

Teaching postdoc at U of Kansas

The Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Kansas announces the availability of a three year postdoctoral teaching fellowship. Job Description:

1.5 VAPs at St. Olaf College MN

The Saint Olaf College Physics Department invites applicants for two Visiting Assistant Professor positions for Academic Year 2014-2015: one position is full time for the whole year, starting Aug. 15, 2014 (1.0 FTE). The other position is full time for half the year, starting Feb. 1, 2015 (0.5 FTE).

Primary Responsibilities (each position):  Teach a combination of lecture and laboratory courses in physics with a load of 6 course-equivalents for the full year position and 3 course equivalents for the half year position. Courses to be taught include introductory physics with labs, advanced physics laboratory, and possibly a general education course or an elective course for physics majors.

Qualifications:  Ph. D. in physics (or in a closely related field with a strong physics foundation) and demonstrated potential for excellent teaching in a residential liberal arts college setting. We seek motivated teachers who will thrive in an environment where close collaboration with students is the norm. Strong candidates nearing completion of the Ph.
