Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Physics/ Astronomy Fall 2021, School of Science and Mathematics

Positions: The Department of Physics at Truman State University, a top-ranked public liberal arts and sciences university, has one full-time, tenure track appointment beginning August 2021. The Department is in the process of expanding our astronomy course offerings and adding an Astronomy/Astrophysics track to our major. Ideal candidates will be able to teach both introductory and advanced courses in physics and astronomy, and provide high-quality research experiences for undergraduates. 

Responsibilities: Teaching a range of introductory and advanced undergraduate physics and astronomy courses; conducting research and scholarship involving undergraduate students (startup funds are available); academic advising of physics majors; service to the department, school, and university.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or related field. (ABD candidates will be considered with an expected Ph.D. completion within one year of the start date.)

  • Ability to teach a wide range of courses in Truman’s undergraduate physics curriculum, including undergraduate astronomy courses

Program: The Department of Physics is part of the School of Science and Mathematics at Truman State University. The department has 6 faculty members and approximately 80 undergraduate majors. Teaching and research laboratories, classrooms, and offices are located in the science building on campus. The Truman State Observatory is located at a semi-rural location on the University farm, about 2 miles southwest of the main campus. The fully automated and remotely operable observatory is equipped with a 17-inch Planewave telescope, several SBIG CCD cameras with standard filters, a weather station, and a cloud sensor. The observatory is used for astronomy research, for introductory labs and advanced observational astronomy classes, and for public outreach. The Physics Education Research Laboratory at the University of Maine is still searching for applicants for two separate postdoctoral research associate positions in physics education research — now with a revised (and flexible) tentative starting date of May 1, 2021 (due to pandemic-related delays). We are excited to have two postdocs join our active research group in physics education at the same time so they can benefit not only from interacting with the group overall but also with one another. 

The first postdoc (https://umaine.hiretouch.com/job-details?jobID=63683&job=postdoctoral-research-associate) will work on a multi-institutional collaboration that aims to integrate findings and models from cognitive science (particularly those related to dual-process theories of reasoning) into research-based curriculum development efforts in physics in order to maximize their efficacy.  The postdoc will be mentored by MacKenzie Stetzer (University of Maine), in collaboration with Andrew Boudreaux (Western Washington University), Paula Heron (University of Washington), Mila Kryjevskaia (North Dakota State University), and Beth Lindsey (Penn State Greater Allegheny).

The second postdoc (https://umaine.hiretouch.com/job-details?jobID=63684&job=postdoctoral-research-associate) will work on a multi-institutional collaboration implementing a coordinated program of research and instructional materials development centered on students’ use of and reasoning about key mathematical topics in upper-division physics courses. The postdoc will be mentored by John Thompson (University of Maine), in collaboration with Michael Loverude (California State University - Fullerton) and Warren Christensen (North Dakota State University).

Both postdocs will be based at UMaine but work with collaborators remotely.  Due to the pandemic, a remote start is possible, but the postdocs would be expected to relocate to UMaine when feasible.

PER Postdoc, Cornell NY

 NOW HIRING: POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE: PHYSICS EDUCATION RESEARCH

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Physics and Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics at Cornell University. The successful candidate will participate in a project to evaluate student framing in non-traditional instructional physics labs.

 

 

Job description:

 

The successful candidate will take a leading role in the collection and analysis of video and written data of students working on group lab activities, particularly to evaluate evidence of student framing over time. The successful candidate will be advised by Prof. Natasha Holmes and work collaboratively with several graduate and undergraduate students on the project, joining a collaboration with researchers at Tufts University (David Hammer) and the University of Washington-Bothell (Rachel Scherr).

 

Discipline-based education research is growing at Cornell, with faculty and collaborators in physics, biology, and other STEM fields, as well as a number of teaching postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students across disciplines. The physics education researchers, led by Holmes, includes 1-2 postdocs, 4-5 graduate students, and 2-3 undergraduate researchers. We also collaborate extensively with biology education researchers, led by Prof. Michelle Smith in the department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, including 4 postdocs, 2 graduate students, and 3 undergraduates. Together, we hold joint group meetings and journal club discussions and collaborate on several funded projects. Thus, as a postdoc in the group, the successful candidate would be well-supported in their research efforts, connecting with an interdisciplinary group of discipline-based education researchers.

  • Exposure to research on lab instruction an asset, but not required.

Multiple Fixed-Term Assistant Professor Positions, Michigan State

 Michigan State University’s Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering (CMSE) invites applications for several Fixed-term Assistant Professor positions with a starting date of Fall 2021. These new positions are currently set to be a 2 course per semester teaching load with the possibility of a reduction to 1 course per semester. Instructional courses taught in CMSE focus on computational modeling and/or data science. Successful candidates will receive training in research-based teaching pedagogy, will have the opportunity to perform research in collaboration with CMSE faculty members, and will be able to participate in a range of additional professional development opportunities. These positions are potentially renewable on an annual basis through Spring 2024, contingent upon satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. in any field of mathematics, science, or engineering by August 15, 2021, as well as have substantial experience in computational or data science, which may include the development of numerical algorithms or their application to a particular field of study. Applicants are also expected to be able to program using Python, R, or a sufficiently similar language. In addition, previous teaching experience (either as a TA or instructor) is desired. Fixed-term Assistant Professors will be paired with one or more faculty mentors with whom they have compatible research interests and will engage in CMSE’s instructional training and mentoring program. Tenure-Track Assistant Professor Position


The College of Sciences seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor with expertise in education research in the fields of biology, biochemistry, chemistry, geosciences, mathematics, statistics, or physics beginning Fall 2021. Candidates are expected to develop a robust research program that includes external funding and scholarly productivity, teach departmental courses, and mentor departmental undergraduate and graduate (masters and doctoral) students. Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the  territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Physics in the Faculty of Science at Ryerson University invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Physics Pedagogy.  The appointment shall be effective 1 July 2021, subject to final budgetary approval. 

This position is an integral part of the Faculty of Science Strategic Plan to create a world-class group in Science Education Research, beginning with a cluster of four positions, one in each of Computer Science, Chemistry/Biology, Mathematics and Physics departments. In addition to being part of the new cluster in Science Education, the successful applicant will join the present strong core of physicists in the Department of Physics with research interests in Medical Physics and Complex Systems. With this position, the Department is expanding into Physics Education Research (PER). University of Illinois - Postdoctoral Research Associate in Physics Education Research


Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate in Physics Education Research

(PER) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (U of I). The work of the University of

Illinois PER Group bridges fundamental principles of physics cognition, learning, and

understanding with large-scale, classroom implementation.


The primary duties of this position will be to work on a collaborative team that manages and

conducts research on the Illinois Physics and Secondary Schools (IPaSS) Partnership program

(https://ipass.physics.illinois.edu/). The IPaSS program is an NSF-funded project that brings

together high school physics teachers with U of I personnel to develop and implement high-

quality, high school physics instruction. The research project investigates three strands: (1)

program impact on teacher professional development and practice, (2) program impact on

student learning and post-secondary pursuit of STEM careers, and (3) adaptation of university

physics curricula to high school physics settings. The IPaSS team consists of Tim Stelzer (PI),

Eric Kuo, Maggie Mahmood, Morten Lundsgaard, and Rebecca Wiltfong.


The preferred start date is Summer 2021. The position is a full-time, 12-month appointment

that may be extended up to a maximum of three years. Candidates are expected to have

earned or be close to earning a Ph.D. in Physics Education Research, Science Education,

Learning Sciences, or a related field.


Duties:

 Help shape the development of project research strands

 Collaborate on project data collection and analysis

 Co-develop and support professional development program activities

 Present research through conference presentations and journal articles

 There are also opportunities to get involved on other projects in the U of I PER group.


Desired qualifications:

 Knowledge of science teacher professional development models and current trends

 Experience with quantitative research methods, including experimental or within-

subjects designs

 Experience with qualitative research methods, including video analysis in STEM

classroom/teacher professional development settings or interviewing

 Experience working in collaborative teams on projects with high logistical demands

 Strong writing, communication, and/or presentation skills

 Capacity and interest in supporting undergraduate and graduate student research.

The Department of Physics at Wofford College is seeking to hire an adjunct professor to teach one section of algebra based General Physics II and the associated lab in the spring 2021 semester. This course is a continuation of General Physics I covering topics of electricity, magnetism, optics, and nuclear physics.  This course can be taught remotely with synchronous online meetings at scheduled class and lab times.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

For appointment, 18 hours of physics graduate instruction from an accredited institution is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a master’s degree in physics and higher education teaching experience or similar teaching experience.

PER Postdoc, Michigan State

 Postdoctoral Researcher in Physics Education Research at Michigan State University

 

Applicants are invited for a post-doctoral research associate in physics education in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Michigan State University. The successful candidate for the current position will work in the Physics Education Research Lab to study inclusive and equitable assessment practices within the physics community. The researcher would work on projects that build innovative ways to create, collect, and analyze assessment tools within physics classrooms and laboratories.

 

The researcher will be supervised by Dr. Rachel Henderson and will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty both inside and outside of the Physics Education Research Lab. The successful candidate will be encouraged to pursue their own research interests as they pertain to physics education research. There may also be opportunities to mentor junior researchers (e.g. graduate students and undergraduates) in projects related to this work.

 

Responsibilities include working in coordination with faculty to:

  • Analyze assessment data that has been collected in the transformed introductory laboratories,
  • Develop new assessment tools and practices using big data techniques,
  • Collaborate with course instructors to implement valid assessments within their classrooms,
  • Mentor junior researchers in quantitative physics education research,
  • Author scientific articles in education research journals, and
  • Present research findings at professional conferences.

 

Candidates are expected to have completed (or anticipate completion of) a Ph.D. in physics, physics education, science education, quantitative psychology (i.e. measurement and/or psychometrics), or a closely related field with preference to candidates with graduate or postdoctoral experience in the area of quantitative analysis of assessment data. The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding mentoring skills, strong analytical skills, excellent writing skills, and the ability to work with undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and staff in a collaborative environment.

 

The candidate will collaborate with faculty, post-docs, and graduate students in the Physics Education Research Lab (perl.natsci.msu.edu). The Physics Education Research Lab at MSU is a dynamic community that includes 6 principal faculty, 5 research associates, 9 graduate students, and several undergraduate students. The appointment is initially for one year, with the possibility of 1-year extension, based on performance and the availability of funding. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. The appointment is contingent upon successfully completing a full background check.
