The Department of Physics in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time teaching stream position in the area of Undergraduate Physics Education. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, with an expected start date of July 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter.

 

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Physics or a related field by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching.   We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement the existing strengths of the Department of Physics. Candidates must have teaching expertise in a degree-granting program at the undergraduate level, including preparation and delivery of lectures and undergraduate physics labs, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures.  Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities. 

 

Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, sample syllabi and course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.

Subject description
Physics Education Research (PER) focuses on educational aspects of teaching and learning in physics in general, including its many sub-disciplines. Rather than studies in the discipline of physics, PER studies the challenges entailed for pupils, students, and their teachers when learning, or teaching, physics. PER explores questions such as how knowledge can be formed and disseminated in more productive ways, the effects that social and cultural practices have on learning, and how these effects are conveyed. The research at Lund University Physics Education Research Group (LUPER) is associated with the Swedish National Resource Centre for Physics Education (NRCF) and focuses on physics education at university level (including physics teacher education and physics teacher professional development education) but does not exclude other levels in the educational system, from preschool to upper-secondary school. The research is thus linked to NRCF's mission regarding support for teaching physics at various levels within the Swedish educational system. The research in PER at Lund University focuses on studies of learning processes through the disciplinary communication between pupils/students and teachers which is mediated by all the ‘semiotic resources’ used in the disciplines—theoretically described by, for example, social semiotics. Of particular interest to this research is the use of programming, technical equipment, embodied experiences, as well as visualisations in 3D and 4D using AR, VR and planetarium (dome theatres), and how these can affect learning processes. Furthermore, studies of pupils'/students'/teachers' perceptions and understanding of space and time (space-time)—for large and small scales—are of particular interest.

Work duties
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

The work duties can also include:

  • Research within the subject area (PER) linked to NRCF’s activities.
  • Supervision of degree projects.
  • Collaboration with schools, their teachers, and wider society.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position (PER, physics with specialisation in PER), completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier. According to the regulations the applicant must have a PhD degree. This requirement is fulfilled if the applicant by the end of the application period have fulfilled all parts of a PhD even though the PhD certificate may not be attached to the application. However, should the applicant be offered the position, a certificate must be presented before the university can make the final decision about the employment.

Additional requirements:

  • High level of oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed international PER journals.
  • Experience in teaching at university and/or school level.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers.

Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • Excellent ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

We would like one course be a 5-credit lecture (up to 45 students) that is open to the entire student population (so no pre-requisites) and could be on any topic of the instructor's choice. (Something interdisciplinary like 'Physics of Dance' or 'Physics of Music' would go over very well, and history of science courses would also be very popular and add some welcome breadth to our course offerings.)

 

The other course would be a 3-credit small seminar course (probably fewer than 5 students) for more advanced science/math students wishing to go into graduate school in physics, applied math, or other physical sciences. This would preferably be something like a junior-level 'Classical Mechanics' or 'Statistical Mechanics' course.

The College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) at Auburn University invites applications for a tenure-track, 9-month position at the level of Assistant Professor, with research interests in physics education research (PER). The home department of the successful candidate will be COSAM’s Department of Physics. TWO Undergraduate STEM Education Fellows

 Undergraduate STEM Education Fellows – Make a difference, grow as a researcher, work remotely 

 

About the Project and Positions: 

 

We are looking to hire two undergraduate STEM education fellows to help with an NSF funded project which is focused on changing the perceptions of grade 7-12 math and science teaching as a profession. The project, known as Get the Facts Out, is an innovative partnership led by the Colorado School of Mines that includes the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, behavior change researchers, teacher educators, and several colleges and universities to serve as study sites. The project aims to tackle misperceptions about the teaching profession with the goal of increasing the fraction of physics, chemistry, and math majors that choose to pursue middle and high school teaching as a career.

  • Respond promptly to questions from the research team and university contacts related to data collection  
  • Download survey data and send updates to the contacts at each university after they have collected data 
  • Update contact lists at each university if they request changes 
  • Communicate with other members of the research team about the state of data collection 

Minimum Qualifications for Position 1: 

 

Candidates for position 1 must have at least 30 credit hours of college credit, a 3.7 GPA, proficient writing skills, professional email etiquette as you will be communicating with university leaders from around the country, an interest in educational research, a strong work ethic, and an excellent ability to communicate as part of a team. 

 

Time Requirements and Compensation for Position 1: 

 

The successful candidate will be expected to work 8-10 hours per week at a rate of $12 per hour. Virtual training via Zoom will be provided to get the new candidate up to speed on the project and job responsibilities. Job responsibilities can be completed remotely. Position 2: Data Analysis

  • Analyze survey data using Excel and basic statistics 
  • Generate data visualizations from raw survey data using Excel  
  • Create well-written, individualized scientific reports that will be sent to universities around the country 
  • Communicate clearly with other members of the research team 

Minimum Qualifications for Position 2: 

 

Candidates for position 2 must have at least 30 credit hours of college credit, a 3.7 GPA, a working knowledge of Excel, an understanding of basic statistics, proficient writing skills, a strong work ethic, an interest in educational research, and an excellent ability to communicate as part of a team.
