Position Summary:

The Education and Diversity Program Manager is primarily responsible for managing the Physics Teacher Education Coalition. This person will also organize, develop, and improve department programs that advance education and diversity in the physics community.  We are looking for experienced science educators or science program managers skilled in STEM education to join our team.

A Typical Week May Look Like This:

  • Develop and facilitate impactful activities for program participants and members
  • Collaborates with Head of Education to pursue and implement new initiatives aligning with the APS strategic plans in physics education
  • Suggest and implement policies that improve project outcomes
  • Develop and implement assessments and evaluations to inform projects
  • Interact with physics faculty, students, and administrators to promote APS efforts

  • Write and edit articles, brochures, project reports, proposals, and web-based materials
  • Organize project materials, data, and policies in accessible ways
  • Facilitate events and meetings through management of task lists, agendas, and outcomes
  • Coordinate with communication department to create graphics and materials
  • Develop and manage project work plans

Education: Masters or equivalent experience OR Bachelor’s plus two years of related experience

  • Knowledge of issues affecting physics education
  • Able to manage multiple complex programs, and to jump quickly between these programs as timelines demand. Leverage resources and connections across projects to support a cohesive portfolio of education programs.

We are searching for an Associate Professor of Science Education with a background in physics or physics education. The position will be 75% Science Education and 25% Physics and Astronomy. This means 75% of the instructional load will be in Science Education and 25% will be in Physics & Astronomy. The successful candidate for this position will have an ability to work well with both departments, make connections with the K12 physics teaching community and contribute to the vibrant activities already underway. Preceptor in Physics Laboratory, Yale CT

 Position Description: The Department of Physics seeks applications for a Preceptor in Physics Laboratory Instruction and Management. The appointment is expected to begin on August 31, 2021 or soon after. The Preceptor will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the 250+ enrollment General Physics Laboratory sequence (Phys 165/166). This includes contributing to instruction, working with and mentoring graduate student TAs, developing new content, and the management and maintenance of equipment. Students enrolled in the course are primarily life science students with some physics majors. The Preceptor will work side by side with ladder faculty and instructional lab staff but will report to the Instructional Lab Director. As needed, responsibilities will also include assisting with other aspects of the physics instructional program, including departmental outreach activities.


The position is for a three-year period and may be renewed under exceptional circumstances contingent on performance, position availability, and divisional approval.

Basic Qualifications: The successful applicant should have either an advanced degree in physics or closely related field, or at least a year of experience either teaching, supporting or managing a college level physics lab.

The Department of Physics at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for an open non-tenure track Assistant Professor of Instruction beginning in the Spring 2022 semester of academic year 2021-22.  The initial appointment may be renewed in future academic years.  An Assistant Professor of Instruction in our department may teach up to three lower division undergraduate physics courses each semester. Part-Time Physics Instructors, Rutgers - Newark

We are searching for an individual with a background in Physics or Engineering to direct the Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) at Edgewood. The Fab Lab is a space that is available for students, faculty,   staff to design and build projects. Equipment includes 3D printers, a Boss laser cutter, Arduino electronics, an injection molding system, and assorted had tools. The Director will maintain equipment for the facility, train students to use the equipment, supervise student projects, and teach courses that utilize the facility. 

Prior experience working in a Fab Lab or Makerspace environment with students is preferred. The ideal candidate will also have experience teaching at either the secondary or college level, and be willing to work on program development and assessment.

Currently, Edgewood College has a “pre-engineering” concentrations within the Physics and Chemistry majors. We also have partnerships with UW-Platteville and Madison College that attract students interested in engineering. This position will be housed in the Department of Chemistry, Geoscience, & Physics (CGP). This will be a 10-month, academic year position. 

Responsibilities

  • Manage the “Fab Lab” facility
    • Maintain Fab Lab and Physics laboratory equipment
    • Provide appropriate safety trainings for Fab Lab users, and development new safety protocols when necessary
    • Work within a budget to select and order equipment/supplies for the Fab Lab
    • Supervise student projects
    • Facilitate workshops related to teaching students to use the Fab Lab equipment
    • Coordinate use of the facility for faculty, staff, and students both from the pre-engineering program and from outside of the CGP Department
    • Help faculty develop ways to integrate use of Fab Lab into existing courses

       

  • Teaching
    • Teach engineering-related courses in the department, such as Intro to Engineering, 3D Modeling & Design, Statics, Scientific Computing (course load varies depending on the semester)
    • Develop additional new courses in engineering, based on candidate’s area of expertise

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Colgate University has an opening beginning Fall 2021 for a full-time position. The primary responsibility will be teaching introductory physics laboratories for the non-calculus courses: Physics 111 (mechanics) in the fall and Physics 112 (electricity and magnetism) in the spring. For Fall 2021, the 3-hour labs are scheduled for at least three afternoons. In the spring and following semesters, there will be three to four laboratory sections per week, depending on enrollment. Responsibilities

•    Hire, train and supervise Demo Office support staff, including maintaining payroll records, conducting training sessions for staff and faculty, and providing overview of each week's demonstrations.

•    Maintenance of the lecture demonstration collection, including construction, repair, and refurbishing of Physics demonstrations used in the Painter classrooms. Designing, building, or purchasing new instructor-recommended demonstrations or supplies. Reporting of problems concerning the physical condition of the Painter classrooms and the classroom multimedia system.

•    Maintenance of the Lecture Demonstrations website to include updating HTML documents and an online inventory of demonstration-related photos, videos, links to videos; also, updating the web-based system for requesting demonstrations in the Painter classrooms.

•    Delivery of lecture demonstrations for classes taught in Painter Hall.

•    Delivery and performance of lecture demonstrations for updated videos, to include both brief instructional and longer pedagogical videos of each demonstration.

•    Prepare and perform the traditional Physics Circus as an outreach activity, including several special days per year (Parent's Day; Explore UT Day; Physics High School Teachers Workshops), without interfering with availability of demonstrations for the core classrooms taught in the Painter Lecture Halls.

Required Qualifications

PhET Project Postdoc [working with Prof. Carl Wieman], Palo Alto CA [Update: position filled]

Postdoctoral Research Associate Position in Science Education Research with the PhET Interactive Simulations Project

The PhET Interactive Simulations project at CU Boulder has an opening for a Research Associate (postdoctoral researcher) position focusing on studying interactive simulations (sims) for learning science. The research project, funded by the Yidan Prize Foundation, is led by Carl Wieman, Professor at Stanford University and Founder of and Senior Advisor to PhET. The successful candidate will work with Professor Wieman in Palo Alto, CA. The PhET Team develops interactive sims for teaching and learning science and math, builds activities that couple with the sims, and makes all of these resources freely available worldwide to educators and students on the web.

This project will mesh with and build on the work of Wieman’s group in studying problem-solving in science. The successful candidate will test this hypothesis by addressing the following research questions:
- How well do students learn knowledge and problem-solving skills through sim based educational activities compared to other instructional formats?
- How well does this learning process transfer across simulations and subjects?
- What is an optimum sim-based activity design for achieving such learning?

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (SMAPS) at the University of New England invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure-track faculty position in Physics at the rank of Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor, to begin August 16, 2021. The school seeks an individual who is highly committed to an academic appointment with an emphasis on excellence in teaching at a primarily undergraduate institution and who will become an actively engaged member of the School, College, and University communities.

Responsibilities

Teaching responsibilities will primarily be in the year-long General Physics sequence teaching student-centered studio physics sections. The School provides instruction to a wide range of life and health science majors and seeks to connect relevant biological content to a physics concept foundation of mechanics, fluids and waves.

The sequence uses modeling physics instruction with activities adapted and implemented for an “Introductory Physics for the Life Sciences” (IPLS) approach.


Qualifications

A Master’s degree in Physics or a closely-related field is required by time of hire. Candidates with a Ph.D. in Physics are preferred.

Individuals with experience and/or training in physics education research, guided inquiry techniques (such as modeling instruction), and/or teaching introductory physics for life and health science majors are especially encouraged to apply.

Job Summary

The job of the lecture demonstrator is to provide demonstrations of physics phenomena and other classroom support for the faculty of the physics department.  The successful candidate will be responsible for all facets of the lecture demonstration operation while working alongside the instructional lab staff to support the departments teaching mission.

Responsibilities

Works with faculty to provide lecture demonstration support, including the following: consulting with and advising faculty on suitable demonstrations, setting up and testing requested demonstrations before lectures, operating demonstrations during lecture when requested, and removing apparatus at the conclusion of lecture.

Works within tight time constraints, often with overlapping faculty or lectures.

Maintains and improves existing demonstrations and their documentation and maintains a lecture demonstration website and catalog of digital photos, videos, and associated media.

Conducts research and development of new demonstrations, both in response to faculty requests and on their own initiative. 

Cares for and oversees the lecture facilities, including the following: providing support for and solving general audio/visual issues; recommending purchases of lecture/teaching facility equipment such as computers, software, technical apparatus, and supplies; and identifying building maintenance problems related to lecture facilities.

Supports department outreach programs and special events.    

Acts as a resource for and instructs faculty on the proper usage of technical scientific apparatus. Uses best practices and laboratory knowledge to promote safety in handling hazardous equipment and materials.   

Provides support for and solves general audio/visual issues. Recommends purchases of computers, software, and technical apparatus and supplies. Identifies building maintenance problems.

Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Competencies

Strong knowledge of typical first year physics curriculum including classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves, and optics.

Ability to safely work with physics laboratory equipment such as high and low voltage power supplies, oscilloscopes, function generators, cryogenics, gas cylinders, lasers, radioactive sources, etc.

Ability to repair and maintain scientific apparatus, including older homemade equipment.

Ability to work standing up for extended times and move moderately heavy equipment.

Ability to respond on short notice and work in stressful situations

Ability to work independently in a self-directed manner as well as in a group environment

Strong organizational skills.

Technical competence in electronics and computer interfaces.
