Distinguishing Job CharacteristicsEngages students in the teaching/learning process; works assigned schedule, participates in college committee work, represents the college in the community, and performs other related duties as required.
Scope of SupervisionNone
Equipment OperatedComputer, printer, copier, fax machine, telephone, other standard office equipment. Standard college lab equipment for physics, introduction to physical science, and astronomy courses.
Confidential DataNon-public personnel and student records and issues and other non-public and sensitive college issues. Employee and student information covered by FERPAguidelines and agreed to in the College’s FERPA Confidentiality Agreement; and confidential or sensitive information included in the College’s Administrative Computer System.
Working ConditionsGood classroom working conditions. The work requires the use of safe work practices with office, class room and laboratory equipment, and observance of safety regulations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly sits and stands for extended periods of time. The employee regularly exhibits manual dexterity, picking, pinching or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm. The employee regularly reaches with hands and arms, stoops, kneels and crouches. The employee regularly talks and hears when teaching or working with students and the general public. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision, with the ability to adjust focus when doing near point work at varying distances from the eye. Job performance will also require the ability to identify and distinguish colors. The employee occasionally lifts, carries or exerts force on objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
QualificationsAn appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is: Master’s degree in Physics or equivalent.
Preferred: Teaching experience, preferably in a community college;
Demonstrated: ability to work effectively with faculty, students, staff, administrators and representatives of business and industry; commitment to a comprehensive community college concept; commitment to assessment of student learning and program effectiveness; commitment to the educational use of technology; commitment to cultural diversity and to a global perspective in teaching.
Applicant must successfully pass required background checks in accordance with Southern State Community College’s policies and procedures and applicable laws.
Ability to document identity and employment eligibility as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.

Essential Job DutiesMust be available for at least thirty-two hours per week to perform assigned duties, which include:
Teach30 semester units per year as assigned, some of which may include off-campus classes, including classes located at business and industry sites and classes on more than one campus during a given semester.
Remain current with subject matter and instructional methodology.
Maintain posted office hours in accordance with departmental and college policies.
Employee appropriate assessment techniques to measure student performance in achieving course goals and objectives.
Communicate progress in the course to students in a timely manner.
Determine and submit students’ grades in accordance with established college policies and procedures.
Assist with student advising.
Develop syllabi, mentor adjunct faculty, plus establish and maintain advisory groups.
Engaging in curriculum development with the College. Prepare and deliver high-quality courses.
Support the mission of the program, division, and college.
During the balance of the weekly time available, participating in professional activities that may include, but not limited to, the following: committee work, community services, maintenance of professional expertise and subject matter, interacting with students and perspective students, cooperating with other educational institutions, cooperating with business and industry, and working with part-time faculty.
Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and punctual attendance and works outside of normal schedule as needed to meet workload demands.
