Job SummaryThe Department of Science Education at Central Washington University invites applications for one full¬ time (9-month academic appointment), non-tenure-track position in Science Education beginning September 16, 2016. The main responsibilities of this Science Education faculty position are to develop and teach science teaching methods courses for pre-service elementary and middle level teachers and to teach interdisciplinary science inquiry and upper-level classes in science education. The successful applicant must show potential to be an excellent teacher, to advise undergraduates from pre¬ admission to graduation, to partner with the department of Teaching Elementary, Adolescent, and Young Children (TEACH), and to engage in collaborative research projects involving a variety of partners. Non-tenure-track faculty members at CWU are expected to demonstrate effectiveness in instruction and are encouraged to engage in ongoing scholarly activities. There will also be opportunities to strengthen existing or build new partnerships with local school districts and state officials. Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Science Education, Education, or a Natural Science; ABDconsidered.
  • BA or BS in natural science or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated potential to work with K-12 teachers and students.
  • Potential to develop an active research program involving students.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated potential to develop and use innovative teaching and assessment techniques.
  • Ability to contribute to teaching introductory and interdisciplinary science content courses.
  • MS in a natural science or equivalent experience.
  • K-12 teaching experience.
  • Ability to use innovative best-practice teaching methods.
  • Experience with course and program assessment.

Job DutiesThe successful candidate is expected to teach in ways that promote student engagement and thinking, provide a supportive and inclusive learning environment, respond to a wide variety of student needs (from the science phobic to the dedicated science educator), to develop innovative interdisciplinary courses and to conduct an energetic program of scholarly activity in Science Education. Specific responsibilities include:
- Teach elementary and middle level science education methods courses at the undergraduate level in the Science Education Program.
- Carry out a program of scholarly activity involving partners such as students, science education faculty, faculty from other departments, community college faculty and K-12 school personnel.
- Seek extramural funding for programs that further the goals of the Science Education Program
and enhance student learning.
- Develop and teach interdisciplinary science content courses.
- Participate in standards-based program assessment.
- Develop and participate in K-12 and community outreach projects.
- Participate in and lead teacher workshops, community outreach activities, and partnerships with community stakeholders.
- Use contemporary technologies to teach locally and at CWU Centers.
- Facilitate positive change in the department, college, university, and region.
