Learning Coordinator at University of Calgary

Position Overview


The Department of Physics & Astronomy in the Faculty of Science is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Undergraduate Learning Coordinator for approximately 2 years.

The Undergraduate Learning Coordinator will provide vital support and assistance to course and laboratory administrative and coordination activities. This position is a critical instructional resource, actively supporting instructors with specific needs associated with the management and coordination of courses, working with individuals and providing assistance as they seek to create and improve class material, examination material and student resources.  This position is also crucial to meeting the needs of the students in these multi-section courses. The incumbent would assume the coordination duties for large, multi-section courses, as well as laboratory/tutorial coordination duties. The Undergraduate Learning Coordinator is accountable for meeting with and taking direction from course instructors. Primary objectives include ensuring uniformity in the student experience, administration and management of student issues related to missed exams and laboratories, and management of on-line learning systems.

Position Description


Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

    Leadership:
        Coordinating the assignments of approximately 30-40 teaching assistantships per term
        Serving as the primary resource in providing orientation, mentorship and meeting regularly with the TAs to provide ongoing training
        Coordinating TA evaluation and feedback
        Providing pedagogical leadership and facilitate instructional innovation
    Laboratory Coordination:
        Participating in and facilitating the updating and revising of laboratory exercises and manuals
        Developing of laboratory experiments to meet the needs of the students
        Supporting instructors who have specific teaching needs; implementing a skills-based methodological approach to instruction across the curriculum
    Administrative Coordination:
        Assisting the Undergraduate Program Director with routine academic administrative responsibilities
        Reviewing syllabi and acting as a resource to introductory course instructors
        Monitoring labs and providing feedback to Graduate Assistants Teaching (GATs)
        Preparing academic administrative materials regarding both individual student cases and broader program structure

Qualifications / Requirements:

    MSc in discipline (Physics and Astronomy) required, PhD considered an asset
    5 years recent, related experience
    3 years supervisory/managerial experience
    Demonstrated experience working with large-section classes (e.g. as a lead TA)
    High level organizational skills to serve as a resource to various groups (Department leadership, instructors, TAs, students)
    Ability to understand how the discipline (Physics and Astronomy) content relates to student learning and overall student experience
    Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
    Technical proficiency and experience in the discipline
    Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office and LaTEX, as well as the ability to learn new applications
    Experience with PeopleSoft an asset
