Job Title
Lab Coordinator Physics & Astronomy
Requisition Number
07661
Job Summary
Bucknell University invites applications for an Undergraduate Laboratory Coordinator in the Department of Physics & Astronomy. The Coordinator's responsibilities will include the teaching of introductory laboratory sections, curricular development within the department lab program, and
administrative responsibilities for the introductory lab program. The Laboratory Coordinator will generally teach 2-4 lab sections each semester for the department's introductory courses, while collaborating with department faculty and technical staff to improve the laboratory programs in a team-taught educational environment.

The Department of Physics & Astronomy comprises 14 tenured and tenure-track faculty, with support provided by two technical staff and one academic assistant. The Department operates a small observatory which houses an historic (1887) Clark refractor and a suite of more modern educational telescopes for use in both introductory and advanced courses. Our introductory courses are taken by students majoring in all math and science disciplines, all of the students in the College of Engineering, and by students from all majors in a liberal arts environment. The Department typically offers approximately 30 laboratory sections per year in introductory-level physics and astronomy, and the lab activities have been developed, and are delivered, by the faculty.

The Department is committed to broadening the participation of under-represented groups in STEM fields. At their best, our labs are one demonstration of this commitment. Well-designed, topical labs engage students in collaborative endeavors, promote meaningful interactions among students and faculty, and provide a learning environment that is potentially closer to the practice of professional science.

The successful candidate for this position will play an important role in helping our department strengthen this unique learning environment. We seek candidates with a Master's degree in physics, astronomy, science education, education, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience), and a commitment to diversity, inclusiveness, and the liberal arts mission.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Work with faculty and technical staff to develop laboratory experiments at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum.

2. Work with faculty to coordinate activities for courses with multiple lab sections. This work includes maintaining lab manuals, hiring and training of student TAs, handling student scheduling issues, and working with departmental shop technicians to manage lab activities.

3. Teach introductory lab sections. The teaching assignments each semester will be determined by the department chair, but will typically be in labs associated with first- and second-year physics and astronomy courses. These responsibilities may include night observing labs at the Bucknell Observatory.

4. Attend professional meetings to stay abreast of recent development in undergraduate laboratory activities.
