Job Description
TECHNICAL INSTRUCTOR, Physics, to serve as a member of the department's technical teaching staff in support of its undergraduate teaching program. Duties include providing demonstrations--used by faculty--in undergraduate courses to illustrate physics principles in areas such as kinematics, electrostatics, magnetism, electricity, light, microwaves, etc.; preparing desktop experiments integrated into the course content for Studio Physics (TEAL) classes; guiding students in the operation and understanding of these experiments, facilitating group problem solving in an active learning environment, and serving as an expert resource in the use and functionality of classroom multimedia technology; assembling requested demonstrations for weekly review meetings with the course lecturer, finalizing the selection of demonstrations for upcoming lectures, and instructing the lecturer in the operational details of the demonstrations; and performing other duties as assigned. During the summer months, will assist with maintenance and improvements to experiments, including repairs, adaptations of modern technologies, and upgrades to the lab environment.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: a B.S. in physics or related discipline; at least one year of related experience, which may include undergraduate teaching and/or laboratory work; experience using common electronic test and measurement equipment; excellent mechanical and electrical construction skills; competent computer skills; and ability to routinely lift fifteen pounds and weights of up to fifty pounds and move carts of demonstration equipment around the MIT campus several times per day. Seek an organized, detail-oriented team player capable of taking initiative and handling multiple tasks in a student-centered environment.
