Faculty Position

Position: Assistant Professor of Physics. The Department of Chemistry and Physics invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to teach Physics and Astronomy at the undergraduate level to begin Fall 2017. We seek a colleague whose interests complement and enhance our existing activities, who is a talented educator able to cover a wide array of courses in the physics major, and whose research interests will provide opportunities for meaningful scientific experiences for majors.
Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Physics or closely related field is required. Postdoctoral research experience, documented teaching success, and a strong commitment to excellence in the classroom are highly desirable.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach all levels of physics (both lecture and lab-based courses), perform research and scholarship, and mentor undergraduate students. Some courses may be taught in the evenings and there are opportunities to teach courses in a distance learning format. Applicants with a commitment to high-quality teaching and research in astronomy/astrophysics, high energy physics, or condensed matter physics are strongly encouraged to apply.
The Department of Chemistry and Physics has seven physics and ten chemistry professors. The department currently offers courses leading to a B.S. degree in physics with several concentrations, minors in physics and astronomy, and numerous service courses in physics and astronomy that support campus degree programs. The physics curriculum is designed to address broad career goals including graduate education. All majors are required to carry out faculty-mentored research. Current physics faculty at the Hammond campus conduct research at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, PNW’s Energy Efficiency and Reliability Center, and PNW’s Northwest Indiana Robotic Telescope.
