The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Colby College invites applications for a two-year faculty fellow for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years. Colby is a highly selective liberal arts college in central Maine that is recognized for excellence in undergraduate education and close student-faculty interaction. The successful candidate will join a department with active research in several areas. We are especially interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and/or service, will promote diversity, inclusion, and equity at Colby.
Colby's Department of Physics and Astronomy has a flexible curriculum that encourages faculty to design courses that will allow them to best engage undergraduates at the introductory through advanced level and to work with exceptional students on research projects. The Faculty Fellow position has teaching responsibilities in introductory and advanced courses from the core physics curriculum, including laboratories, and provides the opportunity to teach courses in the candidate's specific area of expertise; the teaching load is four courses per year. The successful candidate will be expected to be deeply engaged in teaching, to have an active program of scholarship, and to involve Colby's undergraduates in their research. Prior Faculty Fellows have routinely gone on to tenure-track positions at comparable schools. More information about the department can be found on our website www.colby.edu/physicsastronomy/.
Completion or near completion of a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field is required; prior teaching experience is preferred. Candidates with any field of expertise will be considered. The position starts on September 1, 2017, and the second year is contingent on adequate achievement during the first year. Applicants should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statements of teaching and research interests, a summary of teaching evaluations, and three letters of recommendation. Electronic submission of application materials through Interfolio is required: https://apply.interfolio.com/39300.
Review of applications will begin January 16, 2017 and will continue until the position is filled. For more information about this search, please contact physicssearch@colby.edu.
