Michigan State University is seeking a candidate to fill a two-year postdoctoral fixed-term position to assist with the assessment of undergraduate learning in integrative studies courses at the institution. The person hired for this position will work with an interdisciplinary team to design and implement learning outcomes assessment based on the institutional learning outcomes and global competencies and be supervised by the Directors of the three MSU Integrative Studies Centers in Arts and Humanities, General Science, and Social Science.More specifically, the successful candidate will work collaboratively to conduct literature reviews relevant to learning outcomes assessment and interdisciplinary, global teaching and learning; identify, describe, and analyze connections between integrative studies courses and the institutional learning outcomes and global competencies; associate these curricular and learning outcome connections with relevant and meaningful assessment methodologies; and help develop, implement, and communicate the results of these methodologies. The start date for the position is flexible, but the team would like to have a person in place no later than August 2012.


Successful candidates will have the following characteristics: experience with learning outcomes assessment at the programmatic- and/or institutional-level, the ability to work on a team that crosses disciplinary boundaries at a large, research-intensive institution, strong background in qualitative assessment of student learning, and excellent communication and organizational skills.  In addition to these qualifications, highly desirable candidates should have some of the following preferred characteristics: a strong commitment to undergraduate education; experience teaching interdisciplinary undergraduate courses; a demonstrated ability to assess student learning using multiple research techniques and methods that mix qualitative and quantitative approaches, methodologies, and tools; a background in writing assessment, and experience with a variety of software and techniques used in mixed methods assessment.
