Rio Hondo College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Physics to commence in August 2016. Candidates should have a Master’s in Physics, Astronomy, or Astrophysics or otherwise satisfy the minimum qualifications for this position as stated below. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching at the community college level, to curriculum development, and to the growth and success of a diverse population of students.




Essential Duties Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics
OR
Bachelor’s degree in physics or astronomy and Master’s degree in engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or geophysics
OR
The equivalent.
OR
A valid California Community College Credential authorizing service in the appropriate subject matter
and
Demonstrated knowledge of specific discipline; knowledge of instructional needs of community college students
and
Ability to relate well with peers and other co-workers; to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and to be flexible in a changing environment
and
Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. Equivalencies
The equivalency is 1) A Bachelor’s degree in physics, astronomy or astrophysics and a Master’s degree in any science, engineering or mathematical field and 28 graduate-acceptable units in physics, astronomy and/or astrophysics; OR 2) A Bachelor’s degree in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics and a Master’s degree in any science, engineering, or mathematical field and related work experience, teaching or other professional experience, prominence or eminence in the field; OR 3) A Bachelor’s degree in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics and the unit/course equivalent to a Master’s degree in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics and significant progress toward a doctorate degree in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics to degree completion before entering into contract with the Districts; OR 4) A Master’s degree in any science, engineering, or mathematical field and upper division or graduate units in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics and related work experience, teaching or other professional experience, prominence or eminence in the field.
Responsibilities
Under general direction: Instruct students in the assigned discipline • Develop curricula, instructional methodology, strategies • Advise students in both group and individual contacts • Assist students in improving time management and learning skills • Participate in institutional activities including but not limited to flex and staff development • Perform peer reviews as required in the association contract • Participate in other contractually required activities • Meet regularly with discipline/division peers • Provide support for discipline/division recruitment, research and development • Participate on institutional committees and activities • Work towards continuous personal growth and development • Perform other duties as directed or specified by Board Policy, California Education Code, or Faculty Association contract. • Assignments may be either day or evening, weekday or weekends or online.
Foreign Degrees
Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.
