One or More Sabbatical Replacements, Embry-Riddle, Daytona FL

http://careers.erau.edu

The Department of Physical Sciences at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Daytona Beach Campus invites applications for a Tenure-Track faculty position in the astronomical sciences, including planetary science.  Candidates with observational and/or instrumentation experience who are interested in using the facilities outlined below are especially encouraged to apply.  This 9-month tenure track position may be at any rank: assistant through full professor. Applicants for this position must have a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or related discipline.  In addition, one or more sabbatical replacement instructor positions will be available.  Applicants for the latter must have at least a M.S. degree in physics, astronomy, or related discipline.  All candidates must be available by August 15, 2016.

The successful candidate for the Tenure-Track position must demonstrate the ability to develop a productive and vigorous externally-funded research program, the enthusiasm and commitment to teach and mentor both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to participate in our astronomy outreach activities.  A successful candidate for the instructor position will be expected to have a proven record of teaching introductory-level physics and/or astronomy classes.  Although the latter is a one-year appointment, renewal is possible subject to availability of funding and service course needs.

The Physical Sciences Department has about 35 faculty members.  It is home to a new and rapidly expanding BS Astronomy & Astrophysics program, one of the leading ABET-accredited undergraduate Engineering Physics programs in the U.S., as well as growing BS Space Physics, MS Engineering Physics, and PhD Engineering Physics programs.  The Department also provides service courses in physics, astronomy, biology, chemistry, and environmental sciences to other majors.  The Department operates a new 1-meter telescope, the largest research telescope in Florida.  It is located atop the College of Arts and Science Building and is equipped with a suite of visual, photometric, and spectroscopic instrumentation.  The Observatory hosts six large public outreach events during the academic year that regularly attract 300 or more visitors to each event.  The astronomy and astrophysics curriculum includes three laboratory courses that make use of a fully-equipped set of six Takahashi 6-inch refractors on Paramount MX/ME mounts and CCD cameras.  ERAU also leads a 13-institution consortium, the Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy (saraobservatory.org).  SARA operates 1-meter class telescopes for astronomical research and education at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona (SARA-KP), Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory in Chile (SARA-CT) and Roques de los Muchachos Observatory in the Canary Islands off the African coast (SARA-RM).  All these telescopes are accessible over the internet in real time, so that faculty and students may conduct observations from Daytona Beach.  ERAU receives about 30 nights per year on each telescope.

Applications are under consideration now and the position will remain open until filled.  Completed applications must include a cover letter, full CV, statements of teaching philosophy and research interests, as well as the names, telephone numbers, and email addresses of at least three professional references.  All materials must be submitted through our online application portal http://careers.erau.edu .  For information on the position and department, please contact Terry D. Oswalt, Ph.D., Chair, Department Physical Sciences, terry.oswalt@erau.edu , 386-226-7571.  For questions or help on the application process, please contact Erin Goldesberry, goldesbe@erau.edu .
