Director of Asssessment at Tufts

Director of Assessment for Arts and Sciences/Full-Time Lecturer in Educational Assessment (Non-tenure-track)

Tufts University Department of Education seeks a full-time, non-tenure-track, faculty member for a two-year, renewable position in Educational Assessment. The starting date is September 1, 2010. The full-time faculty member will also serve as the School of Arts and Sciences Director of Assessment. Requirements at the time of the appointment include: a doctoral degree in education, psychology, or assessment and measurement; a specialization in assessment; experience in fields such as statistics, educational administration, and assessment; demonstrated effectiveness in training, research design, oral presentation, and collaborative problem solving; and prior experience in institutional research and outcomes assessment in higher education.

Preferable qualities of a successful candidate are:
  • Prior experience teaching at the higher education level.
  • Familiarity with accreditation; strong preference will be afforded to applicants with familiarity with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), or another college and university accrediting association.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in groups and build consensus.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses related to evaluation and assessment, as well as to formally or informally advise students in the different graduate programs in our department who are interested in issues related to assessment. The successful candidate will also advise faculty in our different programs as they explore ways to address issues of assessment throughout their syllabi and curricula. As Director of Assessment for Arts and Sciences, we expect the faculty member filling this position to support the School of Arts and Sciences and the Arts and Sciences Faculty Outcomes Assessment Committee. Core leadership responsibilities will include working with academic department chairs and faculty to formulate goals and objectives, designing appropriate direct and indirect assessment measures, coordinating and overseeing data collection relating to assessment of learning outcomes, and managing assessment databases. Related duties will concern shared responsibility for best practice research, support of general education assessment systems, and helping analyze and respond to issues raised by the institution-wide student surveys and other data.
