TT and T at University of Maryland -- College Park

Professor: STEM Learning / STEM Education Assistant/Associate Professor: Science Learning / Science Education

The College of Education invites highly qualified individuals to apply for two new faculty positions related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning and education. We seek individuals who have established dynamic research programs whose emphasis may include new theories of learning, innovative practices in teaching, and the study and design of emerging technologies. We invite these exemplary individuals to join College of Education faculty as we engage in a shared vision of teaching and research on the cognitive, social, cultural, and technological aspects of learning that enhance education in the sciences and beyond.

Professor: STEM Learning / STEM Education (position #105380)

The College of Education will hire an experienced full professor who is nationally renowned, who has built a scholarly reputation appropriate for the College in content area related to STEM learning and STEM education. Strong candidates may also possess a focus on innovation in technology (e.g., internet, social networking, problem-solving simulations, games-based assessment, or assistive technology). This faculty member should have the ability and drive to provide College and campus leadership in STEM learning research and development, and assist the College in developing an expanded vision and plan related to technology, innovation, and 21st century skills. The successful candidate’s home department within the College will depend upon expertise and fit.

The successful candidate must have:
• a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a STEM-related field;
• a substantial record of research accomplishments and scholarly publications;
• a history of attracting and managing extramural funding;
• a strong record of successful doctoral student mentorship and placement;
• a record of leadership in professional research associations and in international, national, and/or state educational research or policy agencies.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will also have:
• successful and innovative teaching experiences in STEM-related content areas;
• conducted cutting-edge research that shapes the interface among education, technology, and STEM disciplines;
• demonstrated the ability to forge cross-departmental and cross-college connections related to research and instruction in STEM fields;
• evidence of research and teaching that addresses diversity issues in education, such as development of curricula supporting diverse and/or special-needs populations.

Assistant/Associate Professor: Science Learning / Science Education (position #105429)

The College of Education will hire an Assistant/Associate Professor in science education. This faculty member will be expected to develop a dynamic, sponsored, innovative research program, advise graduate students, and teach courses in science education research and as part of the College's teacher credential program.

The successful candidate must have:
• a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in science education or a closely related field by the time of appointment;
• the ability to conduct cutting edge, high impact research related to science learning and science education; exemplary and innovative teaching experience with an emphasis in science learning and science education;
• a record of, or strong potential for, securing extramural funding;
• ability to work comfortably in an environment with cross-departmental and cross-college connections related to research and instruction in STEM fields.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will also have:
• successful and innovative teaching experiences in STEM-related content areas;
• evidence of research and teaching that addresses diversity issues in science learning and science education, such as development of curricula supporting diverse and/or special-needs populations;
• experience or interest in the role of technology in science learning and science education.

The College of Education enrolls approximately 950 undergraduate and 1260 graduate students in programs that span the array of educational and human development disciplines. The College is currently ranked 18th among U.S. public colleges of education. All 10 of the specialties offered by the College that are eligible for ranking are ranked in the top 20 in the nation. The College is home to the Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education, the Maryland Literacy Research Center, the Mid-Atlantic Center for Mathematics Teaching and Learning, and numerous department-based centers and programs. For the fiscal year ending June 2009, the College of Education garnered over $15 million in external funding for sponsored research and over half of the faculty have one or more grants or contracts.

The University of Maryland is a leading Carnegie Extensive Research University. Among its research centers are the world-renowned Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, the Center for Advanced Study of Language, the Human-Computer Information Lab, the Center for Information Policy and E-Government, the Center for the Advanced Study of Communities and Information, and the Center for Library and Information Innovation. The university is located a few miles from Washington, DC, a major metropolitan region that is a center of the information industry.
