Programs Manager at APS

The American Physical Society (APS) http://www.aps.org, the premier membership association for physicists, seeks a dynamic and personable science education professional to fill the position of Teacher Education Programs Manager based at APS Headquarters in College Park, MD (near DC Metro Green Line). Reporting to the Society’s Assistant Director of Education, this position has responsibilities in three chief areas: PhysTEC (the joint APS – AAPT project dedicated to improving and promoting the education of future physics and physical science teachers.), Teacher Professional Development, and Curriculum Development. Responsibilities include: Organizing national workshops and topical conferences on issues relevant to physics teacher education; Managing PhysTEC Noyce Scholars project and PhysTEC member institution; Conducting site visits to PhysTEC funded institutions; Helping organize and conduct PhysTEC annual meetings; Engaging university faculty and staff in developing activities to improve APS developed curriculum with other research-based active-engagement curriculum and pedagogy; Seeking external funding, where appropriate, to expand our efforts in providing professional development for physics teachers; Working with AAPT to integrate APS professional development activities with their efforts; Serving as liaison with APS Outreach to integrate efforts; Helping develop appropriate physics curriculum based on APS-sponsored projects or products (e.g., Nuclear Forensics, LaserFest); and Working with physics teachers to vet ideas, classroom-test materials, and provide feedback on curricular ideas. PhD in physics or related science required and high school physics teaching experience. Experience with teacher education is desirable. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
