Duties

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is seeking a Policy Associate to inform and influence the U.S. Congress and other policy makers to improve STEM, and to coordinate policy efforts among AIP and its Member Societies. While the portfolio of issues covered will be somewhat fluid, the incumbent will likely focus on STEM education (Administration policy, and Congressional authorizations and appropriations) as it relates to the AIP mission. The Policy Associate will also responsible for tracking developments in climate change and energy; representing AIP on issues that fall within his/her area of responsibility at meetings with Executive and Legislative Branch staff, and scientific society and coalition meetings. She/he will work with AIP leadership, partners, and other stakeholders to develop and implement policy outreach agendas targeted at key decision makers, and will serve as the primary policy contact on the issues for which she/he is responsible. She/he will support the gathering and dissemination of science policy information primarily through FYI, the AIP STEM policy electronic newsletter (see: http://www.aip.org/fyi/). The Policy Associate will have considerable opportunities to develop and implement advocacy strategies around STEM policy.



Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, public policy, political science or related field with two to four years experience working for Congress or the Executive Branch, or in government relations for an organization or association is required. The ideal candidate will have experience and knowledge of STEM policy issues, public policy formulation and federal legislative processes, and strong strategic planning and thinking skills. Excellent written and verbal communications skills are required. Must have the ability to multitask and be self-directed.
