Job Summary: Reporting to the Vice President of Instruction provides divisional leadership that supports the vision, mission and strategic goals of the College. Responsible for the development, implementation, evaluation and management of assigned instructional programs, division services, budget and division employees. Provides leadership in curriculum, educational assessment, strategic planning and budgeting. Employs enrollment management and retention strategies. Fosters collaborative working relationships with internal and external counterparts to communicate and coordinate strategies that support College and instructional goals; to assess and resolve academic issues; and to promote programs and services.
Includes life sciences (anatomy/physiology, biology, microbiology, fisheries and natural resources) and physical sciences (chemistry, geology, physics/astronomy and sustainability, health and safety sciences).
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree (or higher) in an area discipline or a related discipline (See Job Summary for a list of related disciplines.)
  • Five years of related teaching experience in one or more of the unit disciplines
  • Two years of instructional administrative experience
  • At the college’s discretion, additional education/experience may be substituted for experience/education on a year-for-year basis.

  • Experience working with diverse backgrounds of the College’s community, students and employees; demonstrated commitment to promoting access and diversity

Responsibilities/Duties: Position Specific Duties
  1. Provides leadership in curriculum design, instructional delivery, accreditation, and assessment activities in accordance with the MHCC Educational Assessment Plan. Applies/adopts best practices to promote effective teaching and learning strategies. Employs appropriate enrollment management and retention strategies.
  2. Directs the quarterly/annual class scheduling and faculty assignments in consultation with faculty members within each assigned discipline and coordinates schedules with other areas of the College, which may include facilities, equipment, and contracts for internal and external user groups. Oversees maintenance of accurate catalog information, degree worksheets, advising materials and division content on the mhcc.edu website.
  3. Manages full-time and part-time faculty workloads for compliance with district policies and collective bargaining agreements. Maintains confidentiality of student records, grievance records, personnel files, and other sensitive information.
  4. Promptly investigates and resolves problems, complaints, and grievances. Serves as a liaison between assigned programs that include students, staff, faculty, and administration. Functions as an active, supportive, and confidential member of the Executive Committee and as a communication link to faculty.
  5. Promotes course and /or program articulation and transfer by involvement in high schools, and local, regional and state initiatives on education improvement.
  6. Establishes and maintains FTE targets and effectively allocates staff and budget resources. Assists in the development of marketing strategies leading to program recognition and growth.
  7. Directs the preparation of capital equipment requests. Supervises expenditures of capital equipment funds within College practices, policies, and procedures.
  8. Develops processes and systems that enhance instruction. Serves as the liaison to other divisions and departments of the College relating to academic programs, physical assets, and facilities. Establishes division/department/discipline committees, and in collaboration with faculty, appoints membership to committees.
  9. Facilitates the preparation of short-and long-term division/department/discipline plans in support of the College goals and objectives. Communicates College activities, plans, decisions and events to division faculty, staff, advisory committees and students.
General Duties
  1. Provides strategic, innovative leadership in the design, implementation and continuous improvement of the division and related programs and services. Responsible for division alignment with College strategic initiatives and facilitates the preparation of short- and long-term plans in support of College mission, vision and goals.
  2. Responsible for division budget(s) development and management. Prepares, monitors, controls and ensures spending within the budget allocation. Develops cost estimates for future division needs.
  3. Responsible for training, personal and professional development, encouragement and motivation of employees, both direct and indirect reports, to enhance individual skills, promote professional growth and maximize staff performance. Fosters an environment that encourages and supports teamwork. Models and maintains high performance standards and performance expectations.
  4. Responsible for employee supervision and accountability, both direct and indirect reports, including recruitment, selection, orientation, scheduling, evaluation, coaching, rewards/recognition, and discipline.
  5. Ensures division employees provide excellent customer service and a welcoming, supportive, and respectful work environment. Investigates and resolves requests and concerns.
  6. Establishes and maintains collaborative working relationships with internal employees. Actively participates on and/or leads various College committees, meetings, and workgroups.
  7. Establishes and maintains collaborative working relationships with business and industry partners, agencies, community organizations and/or education institutions. Serves as College representative on various statewide, local and College committees and attends events as appropriate.
  8. Ensures division compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, accrediting commissions, licensing requirements, and with administrative regulations, Board policies and collective bargaining agreements as appropriate. Applies the College’s interpretation of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  9. Promotes strategic and/or improved services for students, employees and the community. Utilizes existing technology to maximize efficiency and advocates for the continuing expansion of division technology within fiscal constraints.
  10. Attends training sessions and participates in professional training opportunities.
  11. Dedicated to, and promotes, diversity in staffing, curriculum, programs and services.
  12. Ensures and promotes health and safety in the workplace.
  13. Maintains the confidentially of information.
Additional Duties

  1. Instructs students in a classroom, lab, learning center or other setting as appropriate.

  2. Assists with resource development in collaboration with College Advancement and/or other partners.

  3. Performs all other related duties as assigned.
