OVERVIEW:
The Department of Mathematics is committed to excellence in lower division education for developmental students, transfer students, and STEM majors. We believe students can achieve high levels of success if we maintain high standards for our student-centered teaching. We take pride in the way members of our faculty, both full-time and associate, work together as well as support and respect each other. We seek a well-rounded mathematician with a particular interest and strength in teaching transfer-level courses. Our needs also include someone interested in developmental courses who will contribute to our program providing leadership in areas such as (but not limited to): Math Computer Lab, Student Success Projects, Conference Coordination, Accelerated Remedial Programs, Math Club/Competitions/AMATYC.

POSITION DUTIES:
Teaching a wide variety of courses, which may include pre-algebra through differential equations, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, and statistics.
Teaching at least one advanced mathematics course each semester.
Participating fully in department life, activities, and culture while taking a leadership role within the department.
Participating in at least one college-wide committee every academic year.

Representative Duties:
CLASSIFICATION RESPONSIBILITIES:
All Butte College full-time Faculty are responsible for the following:
Plans for and initiates curriculum improvements.
Plans for and is continually well prepared to teach.
Provides organized delivery of instruction.
Is courteous to and approachable by students.
Instruction is consistent with the stated and approved goals and content of the course.
Sticks to the subject matter of the course.
Shows enthusiasm for the subject matter.
Uses effective motivation to create a personal desire to learn the subject/skill(s).
Uses standards of student evaluation that are clear, fair, and followed consistently throughout the course.
Requires levels of instructor and student effort sufficient to the mastery of the subject or skills in the course.
Grades and returns student assignments and tests in a reasonable period of time.
Makes effective use of teaching aids and materials required of students (e.g., texts, manuals, etc.).
Is effective as a teacher.
Prepares complete course outlines and syllabi.
Continually revises and updates course content and materials of instruction.
Coordinates course contents and methods with other teachers in the program/discipline.
Meets and assists students during office hours or by appointment or at other reasonable times.
Initiates and carries through with improvements to course contents and methods.
Initiates and/or participates in overall department-wide program development, maintenance, evaluation, revision and/or expansion.

Qualifications/Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a California Community College Credential, authorizing full-time instruction in Mathematics OR
Master’s Degree in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics OR
Bachelor’s Degree in either of the above AND Master’s Degree in Statistics, Physics, or Mathematics Education OR
The equivalent to District minimum qualifications described above. Equivalency may include any combination of education, training, teaching, or related employment experience that would be approximately equal to one of the above. (Applicant wishing to be considered for employment under District equivalency standards must submit a detailed statement explaining why you feel you possess the equivalent to the minimum qualifications).
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong preparation in mathematics as evidenced by undergraduate and graduate level coursework.
Prior successful experience teaching mathematics at the college level or evidence of the potential to be a successful teacher at that level.
Ability to inspire and motivate students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and ages.
Sensitivity to the concerns many students bring to mathematics classes and the ability to address these concerns effectively.
Coursework in physics or other applied disciplines.
Commitment to a working atmosphere emphasizing respect and cooperation among colleagues.
Willingness to contribute to the department and the college above and beyond classroom instruction.
Current and lively interest in learning and exploring mathematics.
Knowledge of contemporary issues in mathematics education.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
