Position Profile
Duties:
Teach and develop lecture and laboratory physics courses
from the descriptive through calculus-based levels, in particular
including the physics course sequence for engineering majors, Physics
21, 22, 23 and 24; develop physics laboratory experiments and
demonstrations; implement and maintain lower division physics course
offerings aligned with transfer requirements in STEM fields; participate
in the college's STEM program and its initiatives designed to
facilitate student transfer in STEM fields, especially in engineering;
maintain office hours; participate in the development and evaluation of
curriculum and course materials, selection of textbooks, academic and
career advisement, student learning outcome (SLO) development and
assessment, departmental program review, professional development
programs, peer evaluation, and departmental and college initiatives.
Additional Duties:
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics OR
bachelor's degree in physics or astronomy AND master's degree in
engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or geophysics OR the equivalent*
OR possession of an appropriate valid California Community College
Credential authorizing service in the specified subject area(s).
Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the socio-economic,
academic, cultural and ethnic diversity within the college student
population including students with physical and/or learning disabilities
as these factors relate to differences in learning styles.
Preferred Qualifications:
College level teaching experience in physics lecture and
laboratory courses; demonstrated skill in communicating effectively with
college students and colleagues; knowledge of current advances and
practices in physics education and experience applying them in
college-level classes; knowledge of effective practices for encouraging
and supporting the participation of underrepresented populations in STEM
fields; Ph.D. or other additional postgraduate studies in physics
and/or physics education; evidence of sensitivity to and understanding
of the socio-economic, academic, cultural and ethnic diversity within
the community college student population including students with
physical and/or learning disabilities as these factors relate to
differences in learning styles.

Selection Process:
The selection process shall include the following steps:
(a) A screening/evaluation committee will review application materials to determine minimum qualifications for the position are met;
(b) A pool of qualifying candidates will be invited to an initial interview with the selection committee at the Santa Monica Community College District's main campus or one of its satellite campuses;
(c) Upon completion of initial interview process, the selection committee will recommend candidates for final interview with the Superintendent/President who will recommend a candidate for appointment by the Board of Trustees.
Applicants will be notified by letter of their status as the committee progresses through the hiring process. Candidates who are selected for a final interview with the Superintendent/President should not expect official notification of the status of candidacy until the Board of Trustees has acted upon the Superintendent/President's recommendation.
All travel costs related to an initial interview will be borne by the candidate. Only ½ of the airfare cost to the Superintendent/President's interview will be borne by the college.

The Santa Monica Community College District reserves the right to re-advertise the position or to delay filling the position indefinitely if it is deemed that applicants for the position do not constitute an adequate applicant pool.

Salary Range:
$49,282 - $121,340
Pay Philosophy:
Starting salaries for full-time academic positions are
based on a combination of education and experience. Initial placement is
within the starting salary range. Further advancements are based on
longevity and educational growth.
