Physics Lab Tech.-The Petroleum Institute



PURPOSE:
Under general supervision, provides expert technical assistance to the A & S Physics Department of the PI in carrying out its laboratory and/or studio teaching program.
Background:
The Laboratory Technician reports to the Head of Physics but also works under direct supervision of the faculty members responsible for the physics laboratories and studio rooms.
Part of the mission of the Physics Department is to provide effective service courses in support of the engineering programs of the PI. These programs prepare graduates for successful professional careers in ADNOC and its companies and other sponsors. To this end the Physics Department maintains physics labs featuring cutting-edge laboratory teaching equipment. The experimental programs complement the theory lessons taught in physics courses. The Laboratory Technician plays an important role in support of the laboratory and/or studio teaching program.
Position Description:
The successfully candidate will be expected to:
Teach assigned physics laboratory sections under supervision of physics faculty and lab engineer(s)
Prepare demonstration experiments, set up the necessary equipment and either carry out the experiments or assist instructors to do so
Receive and install teaching equipment
Assist in the design and planning of laboratory experiments or exercises and ensure adherence to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) procedures and policies. Duties may include writing laboratory materials
Provide technical support for experimental equipment, including troubleshooting and solving problems, coordinate with other PI Service Departments and initiate requests for major repairs, if necessary
Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:
BSc in physics (or equivalent technical area)
MINIMUM RELATIVE EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Three years prior experience in a similar position at a tertiary institution
MAIN CHALLENGES:
In order to provide the high level of technical support for the physics laboratory program, the Laboratory Technician must:
Keep himself/herself informed of the latest developments in the area of laboratory teaching equipment and innovative ways of teaching laboratory courses
