General FunctionThe Assistant Professor is a member of the ranked faculty with an intermediate academic rank who has demonstrated achievement in the areas of teaching, research, and professional service appropriate to the discipline. The Assistant Professor’s teaching responsibilities are assigned by the academic department head and may include serving as an academic advisor. The Assistant Professor engages in scholarly activities beyond those associated with teaching and is expected to demonstrate professional productivity in research, based upon the availability of resources and consistent with the mission of the University.
Description of Primary DutiesDuties would include teaching physics and science education courses at the undergraduate and Master’s level. Typically nine contact hours will be assigned each fall and spring semester. Research expectations include the establishment of an independent program related to physics education commensurate with a Master’s level institution, and capable of generating external grant funds. Additionally, the faculty member will contribute to the curriculum and student advising related to the BSEd degree in Physics Education. Start-up funds are available.
Minimum Acceptable QualificationsThe minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Assistant Professor are prescribed in the Faculty Handbook. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
Additional QualificationsA Ph.D. in Physics Education, Physics or a closely related field is required. Experience in physics pedagogy research is required. Experience with secondary education methodologies is desired. Candidates should show potential for excellence in teaching and independent research. A commitment to diversity in the educational community of faculty, staff, and students is also required.
