We seek a postdoctoral scholar to join the Visualizing to Integrate Student Understanding for All Learners (VISUAL) and Continuous Learning and Automated Scoring in Science (CLASS) projects in science and technology education. (See TELSCenter.org for more details.)
The scholar will work in a multidisciplinary collaboration funded by the National Science Foundation, including leaders in education, technology, and the science disciplines. Dr. Marcia Linn, at University of California Berkeley, is the Principal Investigator. Lydia Liu, at Educational Testing Service, Inc. directs a subcontract on automated scoring and analysis.
The scholar will join researchers who are creating new technologies to design and assess open-ended inquiry activities to improve student understanding of complex science topics. We focus specifically on effective ways to design and incorporate visualization technologies and on ways to provide adaptive guidance as student’s progress through inquiry projects. We seek activities for students as well as technologies to support teachers as they guide classes using online, interactive units in middle school and high school.
The work draws from current research on teaching, learning, computer science, software design, and computational linguistics. The group builds on previously successful uses of technology such as the Web-based Inquiry Science Environment (WISE). This research will contribute to design and assessment frameworks to guide future education researchers, curriculum and assessment designers, and policy makers.
The postdoctoral scholar will conduct a research program, collaborate on the design of new learning technologies (including innovations in graphing in science, autoscoring of assessments, and adaptive guidance), author curriculum materials to test ways to take advantage of visualizations including graphs, and collaborate with local schools as part of a team. The scholar will have the opportunity to learn about advances on all fronts of technology and education and to contribute to all aspects of the work. The scholar will conduct and analyze research studies in collaboration with the various members of the TELS Research Community, guide designs for automated scoring and data reports and representations, as well as coordinate annual reports, Human Subjects protocols, teacher workshops, and research meetings. Using the knowledge integration framework, the scholar will design and refine curriculum and assessments, help adapt implementations for specific school sites, and analyze and disseminate research findings.
Minimum Qualification: Ph.D. or equivalent in education, psychology, mathematics, natural science, engineering, computer science, or a related discipline at the time of application.
Additional Qualifications: Candidates should have a background in the natural sciences, engineering, mathematics, or computer science and research experience relevant to the learning sciences. Experience in the design, implementation, and analysis of science materials and assessments, understanding of data mining and analysis techniques, and quantitative analysis skills are strong assets. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to work on a team, skill in collaborating with teachers and school leaders, interest in working in partnerships to develop innovations, strong writing skills, and interest in designing and analyzing complex research studies conducted in school settings.
We seek a candidate who can start as early as late summer or early fall of 2014. The start date is negotiable. The position, which has an annual salary starting at $50,194, is for one year with possible renewal for a second and third year.

Content creators at PCS Edventures

PCS Edventures, a company that produces project-based STEM enrichment materials and curriculum for kids in grades K-16, is seeking support with content creation for two ongoing projects:

  1. A growing domestic network of labs, where students create learning experiences after school and in camps. These labs have an ongoing need for new topics and project ideas to add to their library. Contributors paid per project, with residuals for each lab that adopts the content. 
  2. An outreach contract with Saudi Arabia, designing customized content for similar labs there, which will be housed in a series of science centers currently in development. This project is a part of an effort to shift the Saudi economy away from resource extraction and toward innovation and scientific development.
 There is also an opportunity for someone who is highly knowledgeable about student-centered science pedagogy, adventurous, assertive, and political. PCS is assembling a team of representatives to travel to Saudi Arabia this summer, to clarify elements of the project mentioned above. Position Purpose The senior laboratory instructor is charged with all aspects of teaching the laboratories associated with the introductory physics sequence for science and engineering students (31 – 33) and for teaching additional lab and lecture courses, as the need arises. The Office of Communications of the U.S. Department of Energy's Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is looking to hire a full-time intern to assist the Laboratory's Communications team. Among many responsibilities, the office: produces content for and manages a dynamic website; publishes a weekly internal newsletter, a quarterly external newsletter, and a yearly research magazine; manages media relations; maintains an active social media presence; writes, shoots and produces videos; and manages the Laboratory's public tour program.


He or she will be expected to regularly contribute to the PPPL Weekly, PPPL's internal newsletter, as well as PPPL E-News, and the PPPL Website by reporting and writing stories about PPPL. These may include reports of PPPL programs, events, profiles of staff members, awards, etc.

He or she will assist at press events, as needed, including occasional weekend coverage of PPPL events, and will assist the Communications Team with special projects, such as videos.

In addition, the intern will assist with PPPL's tour program by helping to administer tours and assist with tour training and recruitment. Essential Qualifications
The successful candidate must LOVE science and be willing and able to translate advances in fusion and plasma science for the general public.

We are looking for a strong newswriter with excellent reporting skills and a demonstrated ability to write quickly and clearly. Background in science writing a plus but not necessary.
The person should be familiar with websites and website content management systems, social media software and video software such as Photoshop and Premiere Pro.

He or she should be a self-starter with the ability to both take direction as needed and work independently. The intern should be a team player who is friendly and outgoing and is comfortable interacting with the public.

The intern will ideally have some ability to take photos and video and will participate in social media outreach. Familiarity with Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, Google Plus, Pinterest, Instagram, and social media tools such as TweetDeck and Hootsuite desirable.

Principal Research Associate at AIP

The American Institute of Physics is seeking a Principal Research Associate who will be responsible for project management of surveys related to the education and careers of scientists. The successful candidate must be able to manage a research team, direct multiple projects simultaneously, and work with clients.
The responsibilities will include research design, sampling, questionnaire development, oversight of data collection, and development of analytical strategies. The senior researcher will author reports, proposals, and disseminate results to the scientific community.

  27. Participate in strategic planning initiatives (including TaskStream) and align instructional, program, and departmental goals with the MSC Strategic Plan.

Specific Job Functions:
  1. Teach a minimum of 12 semester credit hours in courses that will include a combination of the following courses: General Chemistry I; General Chemistry II; Introduction to Organic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry I and Organic Chemistry II as well as Physics I and Physics II.
  2. The Chemistry instructor may be asked to teach additional courses depending on changes to degree programs and student enrollment
  3. Teach assigned courses in accordance with catalog descriptions, based on approved syllabi, and aligned with equivalent courses at our regional peer institutions.
  4. Develop and maintain a curriculum which appropriately reflects current knowledge in the discipline. The curriculum should take into consideration cultural diversity, critical thinking and quantitative reasoning.
  5. Establish and assess learning objectives for each course and document the results in Taskstream.
  6. Work with other faculty teaching Chemistry to maintain curricular consistency across Chemistry sections on both the Ardmore and Tishomingo campuses.
  7. Organize and maintain the chemistry lab equipment (i.e. pH meters, water filter, ovens, spectrophotometer and hoods) at the Tishomingo and Ardmore locations.
  8. Organize and maintain the chemical inventory and MSDS sheets.
  9. Follow proper safety procedures with respect to experiments and disposal of chemicals.
  10. Serve as a graduation advisor students in Chemistry and other science-related degree programs.
  11. Support MSC student's organization (i.e. NICHE) activities.
  12. Actively participate in recruiting activities organized by the MSC Outreach Coordinator.
  13. Assist in the development of new Chemistry curriculum (i.e. Introduction to General, Organic and Biochemistry).
  14. Participate in Faculty Assembly as well as serve on committees.
  15. Use technology, such as interactive television or video capture, to deliver instruction to off-campus sites as necessary.
  16. Develop multimedia presentations for classroom instruction as well as provide students with hybrid learning opportunities to supplement instruction.
  17. Create and maintain a positive learning environment.
  18. Maintain and revise official syllabi every semester.
  19. Attend and participate in faculty professional development.
  20. Upon employment the successful candidate must complete mandatory NIMS (National Incident Management System) training modules, IS-100 HE and IS-700a, through the Department of Homeland Security as directed by the MSC administrative staff and campus police.

Other Ergonomic Requirements:

The position of Chemistry and Physics Instructor requires some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying, other movements. All individuals are required to be able to perform the movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others, or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how satisfactory performance of the essential functions can be achieved.

Hours:

The faculty member is expected to be on campus from hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. There will be occasions when faculty responsibilities require work beyond these hours.

Qualification Standards:


1. Minimum Educational Qualifications: A Master's degree in Science or Education with the experience teaching Chemistry and/or Physics.

2. Preferred Experience:
a. Minimum of one year successful teaching experience at either the High School or College level.

b. Master's degree in Chemistry or Physics.

Director of Instructional Labs, Georgetown University

The Department of Physics at Georgetown University invites applications for a Director of  Instructional Laboratories beginning in Fall 2014. The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of multi-year renewals.

The Director of  Instructional Laboratories is responsible for developing and maintaining lecture demonstrations and working with faculty to effectively integrate demonstrations into courses. The Director will also be responsible for instructional laboratory equipment, managing laboratory sections, and training teaching assistants for the introductory courses, as well as serving as a laboratory instructor as needed. Candidates must have a Bachelors degree in physics or closely related field, but an advanced degree is preferred.  Prior teaching experience and evidence of strong laboratory skills are desirable.
