TT at Gloucester County College NJ

Full-time tenure track Physics teaching position in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Division. Responsibilities include teaching and evaluating students in physics lectures and laboratory settings along with full participation in College activities and committees. Responsibilities may include assignment to support courses in related areas such as Engineering.
 Examples of Duties:
  1. Instructs and evaluates students in physics lecture and lab courses. May include teaching in related college-level and support courses.
  2. Develops and updates course syllabi and related materials to reflect contemporary scientific theory and practice.
  3. Provides investigative laboratory experiences utilizing the scientific method.
  4. Collaborates with other faculty in the development of effective teaching/learning and retention strategies for students.
  5. Actively participates in the planning, implementation, evaluation and revision of the Science curriculum.
  6. Provides student support by evaluating student progress and providing feedback, maintaining voice and email communication, referring students to appropriate support services, providing academic advice, maintaining office hours, maintaining appropriate academic and attendance records, and submitting final grades.
  7. Implements the philosophy, mission, learning outcomes and objectives, curriculum, and policies of the College and of the STEM Division.
  8. Maintains necessary academic records and submit records according to published deadlines.
  9. Demonstrates fairness and flexibility in interactions with a diverse range of students.
  10. Assists in the recommendation and acquisition of related instructional materials and supplies.
  11. Participates in College governance and operations through Division and College committees.
  12. Contributes to the community as a representative of the College.
  13. Fulfills campus-wide responsibilities.
  14. Maintains professional competence through activities such as scientific endeavors, continuing education, professional self development, research, and writing relevant to faculty responsibilities.
  15. Works productively with others.
 Typical Qualifications:
  • Master of Science degree in Physics (or equivalent field of study) from an accredited institution. Demonstrated successful completion of a minimum of 18 graduate semester credits in physics is required. Engineering coursework may be included if it has a physics focus.
  • Ability to teach algebra and calculus based physics courses to first and second year college students
  • Minimum of 2 years classroom and/or lab experience teaching physics in an academic setting (teaching assistant, lecture, lab, recitation experience accepted)
  • Demonstrated ability to teach both science majors and non-science majors in lecture and lab settings
  • Demonstrated leadership, communications, and organizational skills
  • Commitment to the community college mission including addressing the needs of a diverse student population
  • Ability to design and implement successful pedagogical strategies for students exhibiting a broad range of abilities
  • Experience utilizing innovative teaching methods incorporating technology, including on-line resources
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills necessary to interact and collaborate productively with students, colleagues, administration, and the community
  • Commitment and ability to utilize instructional strategies to promote student recruitment, retention, and success
  • Ability to help students adjust to the college academic environment
  • Doctorate in Physics or equivalent field of study from an accredited institution
  • Teaching experience in a community college setting
  • Experience in Physics or equivalent field of study research including publication in the peer-reviewed Physics or equivalent field of study literature and/or the patent literature
  • Grant investigations, writing, and implementation as an individual and/or part of a group submittal
  • Experience in outcomes assessment and program evaluation methodologies
  • Excellence in teaching and facilitating the learning process for students
  • Learning and using new technology and applying diverse instructional strategies in response to learner demographics and learning styles
  • Being a successful advocate for new initiatives in curriculum or delivery
  • Being skilled in building strategic alliances both within and across disciplines, and within and outside the College
