JOB DETAILS:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
Ph.D. in Physics or closely related field at start of appointment.

Preferred candidates will demonstrate:
  • Evidence of research or scholarly activities in physics or related field;
  • Willingness to seek funding for a research program;
  • Evidence of dissemination of scholarly work;
  • Evidence of research appropriate for UW-Stout, an emerging research institution;
  • Willingness to work with undergraduates in research;
  • A passion for teaching with evidence of teaching potential (particularly introductory and core undergraduate physics classes and labs);
  • Evidence of student-centered teaching (could include innovative and introspective teaching, active learning techniques, innovative or adaptive use of instructional technology);
  • Willingness to provide service to university and/or community;
  • Evidence of excellent written and oral communication skills.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Will include:
  • Conducting research appropriate for UW-Stout, an emerging research institution;
  • Working with undergraduates in research;
  • Submitting proposals for funding from external funding agencies;
  • Submitting articles to peer-reviewed research journals;
  • Submitting funding proposals for research and/or dissemination;
  • Disseminating scholarly work in appropriate venues, such as submission to peer-review venues;
  • Teaching introductory and core undergraduate physics courses (including labs);
  • Committing to reflective teaching and striving for continuous improvement;
  • Student-centered teaching (could include innovative and introspective teaching, active learning techniques, innovative or adaptive use of instructional technology);
  • Advising students;
  • Serving on department/college/university committees or other service;
  • Supporting programs on campus such as Materials/Nanoscience and Environmental Science.

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

The Physics Department at UW-Stout provides service to majors and programs primarily in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The Physics Department transforms students into problem solvers, critical thinkers and good communicators, who display an awareness of and ability to affect their physical environment. Physics Department research currently includes physics education, atomic and nuclear physics, materials physics, nanoscience, geoscience and neuroscience. We seek to involve students in collaborative research projects.

Topics taught in the physics department currently include: Introductory Physics, Astronomy, Meteorology, Environmental Science, Soil Mechanics, Nanoscience, Materials Science, Statics, Strengths of Materials, Neurophysics, and selected upper division courses. Opportunities exist to develop other courses.
