Physics/Physical Science Instructor

JOB SUMMARY: This is a full-time position teaching in the physical science discipline - specifically physics and related physical sciences. Instructional assignments include, but are not limited to: College and Classical Physics, Applied Physics, and related physical science courses such as Exploring Physical Science, and Astronomy. This person may also teach courses in the math discipline. Teaching assignments may include days and evenings, and various sites and formats (face-to-face, on-line, ICN). A full-time teaching load of 15 credit hours per term is typical. Major responsibilities include developing, planning, and facilitating the learning process. Other responsibilities include active participation as a department member with a focus on student learning, facilitating discipline-related activities, assessment of student achievement, student academic advising and department committee assignments. Responsible for maintaining a laboratory environment for hands-on teaching which includes dealing with external customers. This individual will be expected to demonstrate exemplary teamwork skills and communication skills with students, supervisors, program faculty, college committees, other divisions of the College, and the community. Performs other duties as assigned. This individual will report to the Dean of Math, Natural and Social Sciences.

QUALIFICATIONS: A Master's Degree in Physics, Astronomy, Physics/Physical Science Education, or equivalent is required. College teaching experience required. A doctorate degree is a plus. Demonstrated strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills, both oral and written. Must have the ability to effectively communicate with students, colleagues, staff, and the public. Must have the ability to apply teaching skills, motivate and interest students, and be personable and professional. Must also demonstrate or document the ability to learn and apply new concepts and ideas to develop and deliver curriculum. An understanding of various learning styles and instructional modalities is a must. Ability to work with a culturally diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the general public. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Nine-month contractual position beginning August 19, 2013. Salary will be commensurate with the applicant's education and experience and will include a comprehensive benefits program including health, dental, life, and LTD insurance; a Section 125 plan for medical and dependent care expense; personal and sick leave; and a choice of retirement programs-IPERS (defined benefit) or TIAA-CREF (defined contribution).
