Position Summary Information

IntroductionFounded in 1929, Los Angeles City College is the oldest of the nine colleges that make up the Los Angeles Community College District, the largest community college district in the world. The campus is in the heart of Los Angeles, minutes from Hollywood and Downtown and conveniently adjacent to major freeway arteries and public transportation including the MTA and Metro. LACC is culturally rich with one of the most ethnically, ideologically and age diverse student bodies in the country. It is this diversity that drives LACC’s long tradition of innovation and responsiveness to the changing needs of the times and its more than 17,000 students. Our programs range from serving the traditional transfer students to career training, adult career advancement, cultural integration and personal enrichment. Courses are offered during the day, evening, on weekends, via online and through other specialized tracks.
Job DescriptionLos Angeles City College is seeking applications for a full-time probationary tenure track position in Physics/Astronomy beginning the fall 2016 semester. The Physics and Engineering department offers courses in Physics, Astronomy, and Engineering to prepare students for transfer into science and engineering majors, associates degrees, and allied health fields. The department also offers a variety of general education classes that meet the general education requirements for graduation and transfer in the area of natural science with a laboratory. The department provides a rich variety of educational experiences including undergraduate research internships and student science clubs.
The successful candidate will be required to fulfill a 40 hours per week assignment, as specified by the current labor contract, including lecture, laboratory, office hours, and departmental/campus duties. This position is a ten-month (C basis) academic position that may include teaching day, evening and weekend classes. Duties associated with the position include participation in a variety of campus and departmental activities such as faculty meetings, committee work, student activities, office hours and curriculum/instructional development. Minimum QualificationsMaster’s in physics, astronomy, astrophysics
OR
Bachelor’s in physics or astronomy AND Master’s in engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or geophysics.
OR
The equivalent.
Eligibility
Duties and ResponsibilitiesDuties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Teach lecture and lab courses in physics and astronomy in accordance with established course outline;
  • Participate in the development and the assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs);
  • Maintain scheduled office hours for student contact;
  • Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the discipline;
  • Develop and update department course curricula including developing new courses including hybrid and/or online offerings;
  • Develop resources, materials, and strategies, including using multimedia technology to teach students in a multicultural environment;
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff and students;
  • Collaborate with other departments, educational institutions and industry to provide undergraduate research experiences, internships, and instructional enhancement;
  • Contribute to enhancing STEM student support services.
The newly hired instructor should be prepared to teach the full range of credit physics and astronomy classes offered by the department. This instructor will also hold student conference hours, attend department meetings, be active on committees, and participate in other activities required by the College or the District.
Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrate commitment to student success and have experience in applying researched based pedagogy in the physical sciences;
  • Ability to instruct and motivate students from a variety of cultural, socioeconomic, and language backgrounds;
  • Ability to teach algebra level, trigonometry level, and calculus level physics courses;
  • Experience of teaching in technology enhanced classrooms and presenting live demonstrations of physics concepts;
  • Experience with teaching using computer based laboratory equipment;
  • Ability to master teaching of astronomy labs involving learning the night sky, use of telescopes and planetarium software;
  • Experience of teaching physics courses aimed at life science majors;
  • Willingness to teach physics and astronomy courses at local high schools as part of the dual enrollment program;
  • Willingness and ability to apply distance learning technologies for creating online supplemental materials and teaching online;
  • Experience in advising student science clubs and supervising undergraduate research projects;
  • Ability to function and collaborate in a collegial team setting;
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Salary and BenefitsUnder the 2014-2017 AFT Agreement, the salaries for entry-level positions, which include long-term substitutes, range from $53,170 to $82,780 annually. For those with a doctorate degree, there is an additional differential of$3,350 per academic year. The Los Angeles Community College District provides fringe benefits including a choice of dental and medical plans, voluntary life insurance, income protection insurance and vision care. Optional teaching assignments may include winter and summer intersessions.
