Chair at American University (DC)

The Department of Physics in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for Chair starting August 1, 2009. The department offers a BS in physics with tracks in traditional, chemical, and computational physics and minors in physics and applied physics, and graduates an average of five majors and minors per year. Our location in Northwest Washington places us close to numerous science research institutes in the large, economically-dynamic Capitol Region. Responsibilities of the Chair will include teaching courses across the physics curriculum from General Education courses to upper-level major electives and managing faculty, staff and facilities while positioning the department for further growth by seeking external funding and collaborations to improve the teaching and research infrastructure. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching, an outstanding record of research accomplishments, experience in securing external funding for research and programmatic goals, and skills in leadership, communication, and management. To be considered, applicants must have a PhD in physics or related discipline and qualify for the rank of associate or full professor.
