Associate Director, Center for Mathematics and Science Education, UNC-Chapel Hill

The Center for Mathematics and Science Education (CMSE), housed in the School of Education at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, seeks applications for an Associate Director who specializes in Science Education. The CMSE applies the resources of UNC-Chapel Hill to improve K-12 mathematics and science education in North Carolina.

The Position: The position is a five-year fixed-term appointment, with the possibility of renewal. The Associate Director will: Assist the Director in administration, staff supervision, and budget management; develop and administer K-12 in-service and distance education programs for practicing science teachers; maintain and develop liaison with public school systems, the NC Department of Public Instruction, and science educators at other institutions in furthering science education programs; evaluate effectiveness of the Center's science education programs; develop proposals for government and private funding of science education programs; develop and maintain a close working relationship with faculty in the science departments and in the School of Education; supervise graduate assistants and temporary staff assigned to science education projects; represent the Center in meetings with state agency personnel, North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network personnel, and other parties concerned with science education; and teach a college course at least once a year. Qualified individuals also receive an adjunct Assistant/ Associate Clinical Professor of Science Education position in the School of Education.

Qualifications: A doctoral degree in science education or a related field is strongly preferred. Candidates should be qualified to teach courses in science education or in one of the sciences. A minimum of three years experience teaching science or science education at the school or college level is required. Candidates with K-12 teaching experience and who are eligible for North Carolina science teaching licensure are preferred. Candidates should have experience in administration of in-service education or other special programs for teachers, background and experience in educational technology for science instruction, and experience in working with students from groups underrepresented in the STEM workforce.
