THE UNIVERSITY

Sonoma State University is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University. Located in the Sonoma County wine country, 48 miles north of San Francisco, the University has an enrollment of approximately 7,500 students. As of fall 2009, the University had 501 faculty with 54% tenure track. The University is comprised of six schools: Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Education, Extended Education, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences. Degrees are offered in 45 majors at the bachelor’s level and 15 at the master’s level. Sonoma State University occupies 274 acres in the beautiful wine country of Sonoma County in Northern California. Located at the foot of the Sonoma hills, the campus is just an hour’s drive north of San Francisco and 40 minutes away from the Pacific Ocean.

THE SCHOOL

The School of Education, a professional school established in 1986, is dedicated to the education and development of new and experienced teachers, administrators, and other school specialists. Programs in the School of Education prepare students for basic teaching credentials in multiple subjects (elementary/middle level) and single subjects (middle level/secondary) and special education; advanced certification in reading and language arts; service credentials in leadership; and a variety of certificates. In addition, the School of Education offers a masters degree in Education with concentrations in educational leadership; curriculum, teaching, and learning; early childhood education; reading and language education; and special education. The School of Education also offers a joint doctoral program in educational leadership with UC Davis. The School currently has 20 tenured/tenure track faculty and a number of adjunct faculty serving 600 basic credential candidates, the vast majority of whom are post-baccalaureate, and 200 graduate students. The School of Education is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC).

THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Curriculum Studies and Secondary Education (CSSE) is one of three departments in the School of Education. The department houses the fifth-year Single Subject (Secondary) Basic Teaching Credential Program and a Master of Arts in Education degree program with a concentration in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning. The Single Subject Program awards teaching credentials in the areas of English, mathematics, science, social studies, foreign language, physical education, art, and music. The program is fully accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). DUTIES OF THE POSITION

· Teach prerequisite and program courses for the Single Subject (Secondary) Teaching Credential Program
· Teach courses and serve on M.A. committees, as appropriate, in the Master of Arts graduate program in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning
· Supervise student teachers in middle and high schools
· Foster partnerships with local schools and provide service and leadership to the local educational community
· Participate in academic advising; program design, assessment, and accreditation; department, school, and university committees; and other academic service
· Conduct and publish scholarly research, and initiate and participate in the development of grants


QUALIFICATIONS



Required

· An earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. from an accredited university in education or a related field, with a focus on math education, science education, curriculum and instruction, or social/multicultural foundations by the time of appointment.


Desirable

· Documented successful teaching experience in secondary schools
· Demonstrated ability to integrate technology effectively into teaching and learning
· Ability to teach a variety of courses in secondary education
· A clear agenda for research and scholarship in education or a related field
· Experience supervising secondary credential candidates in school settings, leading professional development for teachers, and working in school-university partnerships
· Experience and expertise in addressing the needs of students from diverse linguistic, cultural, and economic backgrounds
· Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in program design and administration and institutional service
· Documented successful college or university teaching experience


All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply. Candidates near completion of their doctoral degree (ABD) will be considered but doctoral degree must be completed by start of fall 2011.







To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory performance in four areas: teaching effectiveness; scholarship, research, creative achievement, and professional development; service to the University; and public service and service to the community. Although tenure may be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that "the normal period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time probationary service and credited service, if any. Any deviation from the normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s).” Tenure is required for promotion above the level of Associate Professor.

RANK AND SALARY



Assistant Professor, $58,000 to $63,000. Actual hiring salary within this range is dependent upon educational preparation and experience.
