The UW-L Department of Physics is expanding in the direction of teacher education. We have recently introduced a physics education major with teacher certification, and we are excited to recruit a colleague to lead this effort.
Duties/Responsibilities: (1)Teach a variety of introductory physics courses for science and education students, as well as methods courses for elementary, middle, or secondary education and majors; (2) contribute to the further development of the university's science education programs; advise/supervise pre-service teachers, become actively engaged with K-12 schools, professional organizations, or other education related endeavors at the local, state, or national level; (3) maintain a productive program of research in science education that involves undergraduates; (4) contribute to departmental, college, and university service activities.
Required Qualifications: an Ed.D., or Ph.D. in Science Education or related field, with a strong academic background in physical science.
Preferred Qualifications: a B.S. in physics or related field, a minimum of 3 years of experience teaching science at the secondary level.
Our new colleague will join a department with nine full-time faculty that offers a B.S. in Physics with the options of Emphases in Astronomy, Computational Physics and Optics, as well as Physics Majors with Business or Bio-Medical Concentrations. We are active in undergraduate research and have a thriving Dual-Degree Program (Physics & Engineering) in cooperation with four Engineering programs including UW-Madison and the University of Minnesota. We have recently introduced a physics education major with secondary teacher certification and anticipate that this option will grow into a major part of our program.
