Minimum Qualifications:
The successful candidate must meet one of the following criteria:
1. Master's
degree or higher in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics from an accredited college or university; OR
2.
Bachelor's degree in physics or
astronomy AND a Master's degree or higher in engineering, mathematics,
meteorology, or geophysics from an accredited college or university;
OR
3. Valid California Community College instructor credential
appropriate to the subject per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to
July
1, 1990); OR
4. A combination of education and experience that is at
least the equivalent of items 1 or 2 above (Applicants making
application on the basis of equivalency must submit the Supplemental
Application for Equivalency Determination form in addition to all other
required materials).
Experience Required:
· Two (2) years of recent full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience teaching
physics, lecture and laboratory, at the college level.
· Minimum of one (1) year (full- or part time) of work experience in higher
education.
· Evidence of sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic
backgrounds of community college students.
Desired Qualifications:
Preference will be given to those candidates demonstrating a
high level of professional expertise on the basis of:
· Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in Physics-related industry or
higher education.
· Experience in designing laboratory experiments.
· Demonstrated skills in communicating effectively, both
written and orally, with students and colleagues.
· Evidence of experience and proficiency in the use of laboratory equipment and
instruction appropriate to college physics courses.
· Evidence of strong commitment to remain current in physics and its
instructional programs.
· Evidence of academic experience in teaching and developing curriculum in physics.
· Knowledge of
and ability to integrate computer technology in the classroom.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Instruct
a variety of
lecture and laboratory courses in Physics. Provide leadership in the
development of a comprehensive physics curriculum. Participate in
program review process and student learning outcome (SLO) process.
Assist with the development and operation of appropriate instructional
facilities and related interdisciplinary programs. Comply with all
SOCCCD, IVC, MSE Academic Unit, and Physics Department policies with
regard to participation in general faculty functions related to the
educational program, staff development/flex-calendar activities,
committee work, and departmental and school meetings. Maintain formal
office hours. Perform necessary clerical and administrative tasks in a
timely manner. Assume a leadership role in the intellectual growth and
academic success of a diverse student population through the careful
preparation of course materials and the employment of effective teaching
methodologies. Assignment may include day, evening, or weekend
hours.
